What's On Tonight (Friday): Time for a Get Away with Nick Frost...

            

Get Away

Nick Frost seems to be working a lot these days.  He appeared in six films in 2024, he's currently voicing SM-33 on Skeleton Crew, and today he stars in Get Away, which he also wrote and produced. He didn't appear in much in 2022-2023, so perhaps some of those 2024 films were delayed.

Frost plays a father who takes his wife and kids for a vacation on a remote English island.  Ignoring warning signs, like people telling them specifically not to go, the family finds themselves in the middle of a cult that's getting ready for a festival.  Films like The Wicker Man (the good one, not the so-bad-it's-good one) are the inspiration here.

Reviews are decent but not spectacular.  Many critics are comparing it negatively to Shawn of the Dead, but it might make more sense to compare it to Hot Fuzz, a film that also takes some inspiration from The Wicker Man.  I'm a fan of Frost and the OG Wicker Man so this hits a sweet spot for me.

*The second season of Goosebumps premieres today with a new cast and story as the series commits to an anthology format.  Subtitled The Vanishing, the new season features David Schwimmer as a divorced father with a forbidden basement and a brother who died mysteriously thirty years ago.   His kids come to stay with him for the summer and then shit gets crazy.  This one looks a little darker and intense than the first season, so you might want to keep the younger kids away.

*Look Into My Eyes is a new documentary on Max that follows a group of people who seek help from psychics in New York City.  The film takes an empathetic look at the relationship between the psychics and their customers, many of whom seem to know it's not real but still find comfort in the sessions.  I'm as cynical as they come but I'll admit I got a little teary watching the trailer.
