Jeopardy! recap for Mon., Dec. 9

 Here are today's contestants:

- Lisa O'Donnell, an ESL teacher from Vienna, Virginia;

- Bill McKinney, a VP of restaurants & bars originally from Boston, Massachusetts; and

- Dave Bond, a retired grant writer from West Henrietta, New York. Dave is a two-day champ with winnings of $51,400.

Jeopardy!

GEOGRAPHY // MORTAL MATTERS // BIG WORDS // MISCELLANY // A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN // THOSE ETRUSCAN DARNERS

DD1 - $800 - MORTAL MATTERS - His body preserved, this leader still looks pretty much like he did at his death on January 21, 1924 (Bill added $3,000 to improve to $6,800.)

Scores at first break: Dave $2,400, Bill $3,000, Lisa $3,000.

Scores entering DJ: Dave $2,600, Bill $7,000, Lisa $4,600.

Double Jeopardy!

THAT'S ALL HISTORY // A FLOCK OF DOVES // ALLITERATIVE MOVIE TITLES // WHAT THE "LL"? // MAIN CHARACTER // ENERGY

DD2 - $1,600 - ALLITERATIVE MOVIE TITLES - David Fincher directed this 2014 thriller that finds Ben Affleck framed for murder (Bill increased his lead by $5,000 to a score of $16,800.)

DD3 - $2,000 - WHAT THE "LL"? - How sweet the sound of this word meaning "sweet sounding"; it comes from Latin for "flowing with honey" (Lisa lost $3,000 from her third-place total of $6,200 vs. $20,400 for Bill and $10,600 for Dave.)

Bill opened a large lead with the help of scoring on two DDs, then late mistakes by both opponents resulted in a runaway for Bill at $22,000 vs. $10,600 for Dave and $6,800 for Lisa.

Final Jeopardy!

ISLANDS OF EUROPE - In February 1793 the French were repulsed in an attack on this island from one just north that they controlled

No one had the correct response on FJ, on which the rather convoluted wording didn't help. Bill wagered $0 to win with $22,000.

Final scores: Dave $5,600, Bill $22,000, Lisa $1.

Triple Stumper of the day: No one knew the parody deity represented by FSM as Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Wagering strategy: This game was a good illustration of why "playing it safe" and betting about half your score from third place on DD3 doesn't usually work. If you miss with a mid-sized wager in this situation, you're almost certainly going to wind up in third anyway, so might as well go big.

One more thing: Usually when I see a TV show featuring Dave, Lisa and Bill, it's an episode of "NewsRadio".

Correct Qs: DD1 - Who was Lenin? DD2 - What is "Gone Girl"? DD3 - What is mellifluous? FJ - What is Sardinia?
