Feed Me: Have a Bagel Day

One origin story claims they were invented by an Austrian baker to celebrate the defeat of the Turks by King Jan III Sobieski of Poland in 1683.

The shape was meant to represent a stirrup, or buegel, as folklore told of freed Austrians reaching out to grasp the stirrup of King Jan as he rode by.

It would become a staple of Polish and Slavic diets in the 17th century, and they were being sold on wooden dowels in London by the 19th century.

Now they're on street carts and we have companies like Einstein Bros, and more locally, Truckee Bagel Co.

And then I saw this.

Noms.
