I'm in Punta Cana or rather Cap Cana, Dominican Republic. It feels like the Grand Cayman except instead of everyone driving on the wrong side of the street it didn't matter which side until we were trapped wrong way on a one way street. It was worth everything to watch our guide take on the Dominican police force with the sheer force of his will.

The guide didn't particularly like me because I wasn't always looking at what he was talking about, having lagged behind or moved ahead. He's used to people who think in two dimensions so everything must be laid out in a line. He's describing what one chapel in a cathedral means while I'm taking pics of another and poking back when he talks about something unexpected. I was happy to give him something unexpected. After seeing Peru and Ecuador and the gilded churches that the Spaniards forced the locals to build on top of their temples I was trained to spot the local symbols that were hidden in plain sight. My guide never noticed this simple cap on top of a European marble something or other. It simply didn't belong. It looked out of place and like nothing else in the church. It did remind me a lot of the folk art that I had been seeing. I think it might be meant to be Adam and Eve. I know that it was seen through a Dominican's eyes and not a Spaniard's.
