Jeopardy! recap for Thur., Nov. 7

 Here are today's contestants:

- Sammy Sanchez, a bartender & private tutor from Kansas City, Missouri;

- Susan Stumme, a journalist from Arlington, Virginia; and

- Greg Jolin, a system specialist & accountant from Raymond, New Hampshire. Greg is a five-day champ with winnings of $135,002.

Jeopardy!

SOME PAINS, SOME GAINS // BASIC MATH TERMS // TV SPIN-OFFS // A STUDY IN SCARLET // SOUTH AMERICAN GEOGRAPHY // STARTS WITH "Z"

DD1 - $800 - BASIC MATH TERMS - The result of a basic operation, it's from the Latin for "too many times" (Sammy dropped $1,000.)

Scores at first break: Greg $3,200, Susan $400, Sammy $400.

Scores entering DJ: Greg $5,800, Susan $600, Sammy $3,200.

Double Jeopardy!

PEOPLE IN HISTORY // TOUGH RHYMING PAIRS // "M"INENT WRITERS // THINGS HAVE GONE OFF THE RAILS // EVERYONE'S LOST THEIR MARBLES // PURE BED-LAM

DD2 - $1,200 - TOUGH RHYMING PAIRS - Someone who contacts departed spirits & that feeling of boredom (Sammy added $2,000 to his score of $4,800 vs. $8,600 for Greg.)

DD3 - $1,600 - PURE BED-LAM - You can use this cozy 5-letter couch as a bed; it's also found in the name of a chicken & broccoli dish topped with hollandaise (Susan moved to a closer third, improving by $3,000 to $7,200.)

The lead was bouncing back-and-forth on top-row clues between Sammy and Greg late, with Sammy managing to come out very narrowly on top into FJ at $12,400 vs. $12,200 for Greg and $9,600 for Susan.

Final Jeopardy!

1960s INVENTIONS  - Poly-paraphenylene terephthalamide was 1st invented to reinforce radial tires but the lifesaving polymer aka this would have many uses

Only Susan was correct on FJ, adding $3,000 to win with $12,600.

Final scores: Greg $5,199, Susan $12,600, Sammy $399.

Wagering strategy: Sammy had a chance to take the lead from Greg on DD2 but wagered less than half of his $4,800. With an all-in wager there, Sammy would have not needed an essential coin flip to secure first place into FJ.

Clue selection strategy: After finding DD2, Sammy continued to select from the same category instead of trying to locate DD3.

Pedantry corner: This FJ clue would have benefitted from the addition of three commas.

Correct Qs: DD1 - What is quotient? DD2 - What are medium and tedium? DD3 - What is divan? FJ - What is Kevlar?
