What's On Tonight (Sunday): Ya Basic

Universal Basic Guys

Tick tick tick tick tick! Here's what's on television for tonight, Sunday, September 15!

Our Top Pick tonight is Universal Basic Guys (Fox / Hulu, Monday). This latest addition to Animation Domination follows a group of guys — and wives — with nothing but time and a little disposable income. The theme song (below) explains the premise. I found the first episode more annoying than entertaining. I'm also not a fan of the character designs in its animation style. Voices include creators Adam Malamut & Craig Malamut plus Talia Genevieve, Fred Armisen, and Ally Maki.

Elsewhere, the Television Academy hands out 25 Emmys, 60 Minutes returns for season 57, the King is back in Oklahoma, the Emperor finds an end, Van Der Valk blows the whistle, Snowpiercer evades the Rat, Ridley is on a new case, Lesley Manville becomes a Moonflower, and an eagle escapes the Great North.

(All times are Eastern. All listings are new unless otherwise stated. For more listings, visit The Futon Critic or Zap2it.)

ON THE SITE

Cancellation League (10 a.m.): There's still a week to sign up.

EARLY STREAMING & EVENING

60 Minutes (CBS, 7:30 p.m. / Paramount+, Monday): SEASON PREMIERE. "The Prosecution of January 6th" features an interview with U.S. attorney Matthew Graves; "Danger in the South China Sea" discusses the growing tensions between China and the Philippines; "Dua Lipa" profiles pop singer Ariana Grande. Just kidding. It's Dua Lipa, duh.✔️

City of God: The Fight Rages On (Max, 3 a.m. & HBO Latino, 8 p.m.): "After taking control, Bradock tries to build trust in the community despite his erratic behavior. Wilson and LΓgia discover a connection between a politician, local militias and a member of Bradock's circle."

πŸ“Ί The John Larroquette Show (Rewind TV, 6 p.m.): John is given an ultimatum -- train the head honcho's annoying nephew (Bobcat Goldthwait) or lose his job.

SEAL Team (Paramount+, 3 a.m.): "The team is sent on a mission to verify concerning intel linking China's drug trafficking to a potential coup in Honduras." Preventing a coup? In Central America?? I thought the American military only encouraged them.

Snowpiercer (AMC+, 3 a.m. & AMC, 9 p.m.): Alex sabotages the track switch computer and, with Layton's help, escapes to town hall. Till gets the drop on Ace and uses his sniper rifle to save Layton and Alex from Rat. Melanie reveals the identity of Alex's biological father.

Tulsa King (Paramount+, 3 a.m.): SEASON PREMIERE. "Dwight and his crew prepare for the opening of their casino and new weed shop but the law comes knocking."

πŸ† 76th Primetime Emmy Awards (ABC & Hulu): SPECIAL. Eugene Levy and Dan Levy host television's biggest night. Sorta? I mean, EGOT award has, like the Tonys, never been a big ratings generator. This year, expect Shōgun to reign with The Bear repeating in many categories. Hacks, too. I've got Baby Reindeer for Limited Series and (very) hesitantly pick The Traitor to upset and end RuPaul's Drag Race's grip on Competition Program. The live-thread goes up at 6 p.m.✔️

Bob's Burgers (Fox, 8:30 p.m. / Hulu, Monday): When Gayle tells the family she's sending in an audition tape to be on Tough Stuff Island, Linda is determined to make her tape boring to save her from being humiliated on a rejection reel. In the restaurant, Bob struggles with his new electric grinder.

πŸŽ₯ Nightmare in the Desert (Lifetime): "After returning to her childhood home, someone secretly tracks an outdoor enthusiast and her urbanite boyfriend through the desert." Evidently, someone is trying to prevent a proposal. Whenever you go to your hometown, it's either attempted murder or finding the love of your life. And on cable TV, it's almost always an old flame.

Ridley (PBS & PBS Passport): SEASON PREMIERE. "Ridley investigates a jewelry heist that turns into a murder case, and thinks it may be an inside job." As usual, while the series airs weekly linearly, all of season 2 will be available on PBS Passport (or PBS Masterpiece on Amazon) at this time.

⭐ Universal Basic Guys (Fox / Hulu, Monday): When David, Andrea, Mark, and Tammy go on a cruise together, David and Andrea unexpectedly rekindle their romance. Meanwhile, Mark's preoccupation with reeling in a big fish leads to him catching a whale that jeopardizes the safety of the entire cruise.

The Great North (Fox, 9:30 p.m.): SEASON FINALE. When the eagle Moon is pet sitting escapes, he enlists Beef and Wolf to go searching for it. Honeybee and Beef bond on an ice fishing trip and try to find a compromise between quiet fishing and fun games.

Industry (HBO & Max): "Harper pitches an idea to Petra that leads them to visit the most important investment banking entities in London, including Pierpoint.

Moonflower Murders (PBS & PBS Passport): SERIES PREMIERE. "Editor Susan Ryeland is tasked with finding the solution to a real-life cold case hidden within one of Alan Conway's early Atticus PΓΌnd novels." While this is classified as a new series, it is a continuation of Magpie Murders, the first adaptation of Anthony Horowitz's Susan Ryeland mystery novels. Lesley Manville returns as Susan. (It's a pretty solid mystery series!) As usual, while the series airs weekly linearly, the entire series will be available on PBS Passport (or PBS Masterpiece on Amazon) at this time.✔️
