The Internet Archive lost its appeal of Hachette. On the surface this seems reasonable and I might even agree with that if it ensured that authors were paid what they deserve. I think we all know that is not going to happen. What it does is ensure that publishers get their cut. Think of this as record companies fighting back against Taylor's Version but for books. IA used to make digital copies of physical books and loan each out to one person at a time. COVID changed that as libraries, bookstores and even schools shut down and books became limited commodities. This decision will not be overturned by these Supremes but worst sting was taken out on appeal. IA is now recognized as a public service. See below the fold for an example of why this so important. Book bannings are on the rise everywhere across the US. Particularly in schools and public libraries. The banned books invariably deal with "sensitive" subjects like race, sexuality, gender, history and politics. All of the above are subjects that kids need to know about to be responsible adults, whether or not their parents are responsible adults or not. Good teachers and librarians are being driven out because their jobs are becoming impossible. [Upworthy] https://www.wired.com/story/internet-archive-loses-hachette-books-case-appeal/
