What's On Tonight (Friday): John Woo Gets His Dove License Reinstated...

The Killer

John Woo returns to American action films with a remake of his own Hong Kong shoot-em-up, The Killer.  The original starred Danny Lee and Chow Yun-fat, while this week's Top Pick stars Omar Sy (Lupin) and Nathalie Emmanuel (GoT).  You may think that's a step down, but I'm a big fan of Sy and Emmanuel and I am tempted to seek out a free preview of Peacock just so I can watch this.

I used to own the original film on VHS along with Hard Boiled.  I love Woo's earlier films, but Face Off is the last one I saw in or out of a theater.  I'm not sure what his rep is these days and how his more recent films have been received (I'll totally internet that later), but the trailer for this is solid and I like the cast.  Goddamnit!  I will find a free preview of Peacock somewhere!

TOP PICK

🎥 The Killer (Peacock, 3:01 AM) 'Zee is a mysterious and infamous assassin in the Parisian underworld. But when Zee refuses to kill a blinded young woman in a Paris nightclub, the decision will disintegrate Zee's alliances, attract the attention of a savvy police investigator, and plunge her into a sinister criminal conspiracy that will set her on a collision course with her own past.  Directed by John Woo.'

Elsewhere...

*After today's Top Pick we need a moratorium on films called The Killer.  It's been less than a year after David Fincher's The Killer.  There's been a lot of films with this title.  It's time to break it up a bit.  Find a more creative job title for people who murder other people for a living.

*Remember what a good day Max was having last week with the premieres of Rick and Morty: The Anime, Furiosa, and Civil War?  This week they have the premiere of Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1.  Feast or famine.

*Netflix has a new teen film, Incoming.  The movie looks to be going for a Superbad thing, which is pretty much its own subgenre at this point. There are worse films it could emulate, but the reason I'm singling it out is because Kaitlin Olson plays the lead boy's mom.  I don't know if her presence will elevate the film, but it makes the prospect of watching it more appealing.  Maybe I'll just wait for a supercut of her scenes.  Save me some time.

*The marketing team for the new Shudder horror film, Hell Hole, really dropped the ball not getting the rights to the Spinal Tap song for the trailer.  Not only would it have gone perfectly with the mood of the trailer, but it would've also made a lot of people more interested in seeing it.  A lot of older people, anyway.  Okay, maybe just me.
