Here are today's contestants:
- Zoe Strassfield, a park ranger & writer from Water Mill, New York;
- Matt Brooks, a healthcare IT analyst from Fredericksburg, Virginia; and
- Cat Pisacano, a nurse from New York, New York. Cat is a one-day champ with winnings of $11,500.
Jeopardy!
STRANGE CURRENCIES // RHYME TIME // NOVELLAS // TAKING YOU TO SCHOOL // LAST CENTURY // BASED ON A TRUE STORY
DD1 - $1,000 - TAKING YOU TO SCHOOL - History: this congressional committee created in 1938 became the Internal Security Committee in 1969 & was dissolved in '75 (Matt added $1,000 to his score of $4,200.)
Scores at first break: Cat $2,000, Matt $2,600, Zoe $0.
Scores entering DJ: Cat $5,200, Matt $6,600, Zoe -$1,000.
Double Jeopardy!
IT'S ALIVE // GUESTS ON HOT ONES // SAME FIRST & LAST CONSONANT // O CANADA // WE STAND ON GUARD // FOR THEE
DD2 - $1,600 - IT'S ALIVE - The "B" in B. cereus, which causes food poisoning, stands for this nasty type of bacteria (Zoe lost $1,400 on a true DD.)
DD3 - $2,000 - SAME FIRST & LAST CONSONANT - Weltanschauung in German, it can be optimistic or pessimistic (Cat dropped $2,000 from her score of $14,800 vs. $8,600 for Matt.)
Cat found DD3 with the lead and only one other clue remaining. She chose to protect that lead rather than going big, which worked out in this case as she missed, so Cat was still in front into FJ at $12,300 vs. $10,600 for Matt and $1,600 for Zoe.
Final Jeopardy!
GERMAN BOOKS - First published in 1812, this anthology included "The Water Nymph" & "The Booted Tom Cat"
Matt and Zoe were correct on FJ, with Matt betting $0 to win with $10,600. A better play from Matt would have been to bet $1,701 to cover the slim chance of Cat also wagering $0.
Final scores: Cat $3,399, Matt $10,600, Zoe $3,100.
Triple Stumper of the day: Alex Trebek would likely have had a facial expression of disappointment after no one knew the kind of love that comes before "in all of us command" in "O Canada" is "true patriot love".
Ken's Korner: When Zoe found DD2 with a score of $1,400, the host didn't advise her she could wager up to $2,000. Zoe then said "I guess I gotta do a true Daily Double" in such a way to suggest might have taken the opportunity to wager more if reminded.
Correct Qs: DD1 - What is House Un-American Activities Committee? DD2 - What is Bacillus? DD3 - What is worldview? FJ - What is "Grimm's Fairy Tales"?
