Today we celebrate Juneteenth. Possibly our most underrated holiday. Union soldiers reached Galveston with the news that slaves were now free. We pretend that it was clean as that. Of course it wasn't. There were plenty of slave owners who resisted and Galveston was hardly the end of the line. But this was the red line and anyone who crossed it was a criminal. If only this marked equality but that's been a long journey and we're not there yet. Free your ass...
