photo mine (beware of Harlan)
I knew the cartels in Mexico were expanding into new markets, everything from tortillarias to avocados. All of this paid for by the American appetite for drugs and enabled by the seemingly endless supply of US guns. I have family around Mexico including a couple places that the US advises me not to travel to. One of those places is Michuacan. We visit Morelia and we devote at least one day to driving to all of the small towns around it. If it's winter we might go to one of the mountains where the monarcas (monarch butterflies) winter. It's beautiful country. It also has an outsized place in Mexican history. It's making history again and it centers around the avocado. Cartels are involved but it's far more complex than that.
