Here are today's contestants:
- Kaitlin Tarr, an aspiring ceramicist from Denver, Colorado;
- Susan Ayoob, a content strategist from San Francisco, California; and
- Adriana Harmeyer, an archivist from West Lafayette, Indiana. Adriana is a 12-day champ with winnings of $278,500.
Jeopardy!
1824 // SETTING PRETTY // THAT'S A FACT // RHYMING PHRASES // JEN // TONIC
DD1 - $600 - SETTING PRETTY - The first act of this Verdi opera takes place in the king's palace in Memphis (not Tennessee) (Adriana added $1,000 to her score of $1,800.)
Scores at first break: Adriana $2,800, Susan $2,400, Kaitlin $1,200.
Scores entering DJ: Adriana $7,200, Susan $3,000, Kaitlin $3,800.
Double Jeopardy!
ROUND SCOTLAND // AMERICAN POETS // TILL DEATH DO US PART // NO. 1 ON THE BILLBOARD TOP 100 // FOREIGN WORDS & PHRASES // ANOTHER DAY IN PARASITES
DD2 - $1,200 - FOREIGN WORDS & PHRASES - "Health" in Spanish; you're wishing someone good health when you toast them saying this word (Kaitlin lost $3,000 from her total of $8,600 vs. $8,000 for Adriana.)
DD3 - $1,200 - ANOTHER DAY IN PARASITES - Anopheles mosquitoes transmit one-celled parasites of the genus Plasmodium to humans, causing this sometimes-fatal disease (Kaitlin added $2,000 to her score of $7,600 vs. $8,000 for Adriana.)
Kaitlin dropped back a bit on DD2, recovered to take first place on DD3, then got the lead back once more on the next-to-last clue of DJ and held it into FJ at $12,800 vs. $12,400 for Adriana and $10,200 for Susan.
Final Jeopardy!
1960s AMERICA - Helping draft an executive order in 1961, Hobart Taylor Jr. almost used the word "positive", but instead chose this alliterative phrase
Only Adriana was correct on FJ, adding $8,100 to win with $20,500 for a 13-day total of $299,000. Note that Adriana would have won even if Kaitlin had been correct, as she made a tiny bet, apparently hoping for her opponents to miss.
Final scores: Adriana $20,500, Susan $0, Kaitlin $12,390.
Wagering strategy: Not only did Kaitlin make an unusual wager from the lead here, but Susan went all-in from a close third and gave herself no chance to win on a possible Triple Stumper.
Triple Stumper of the day: No one knew the person who died on Halloween 1926 followed by annual seances to try and contact him was Houdini.
Correct Qs: DD1 - What is "Aida"? DD2 - What is salud? DD3 - What is malaria? FJ - What is affirmative action?
