Certain foods are customary in Juneteenth celebrations, and traditionally, red foods dominate.
Red signifies resilience amid bondage.
Also important are the recipes that have been passed down orally, but with a twist. Chef Chris Scott says, for example, "collard greens are cooked the normal way, but on this day they may have red peppers included."
Barbecue is considered a red food as well.
And all this should be part of a shared meal, a community gathering like a picnic or block party.
