Here are today's contestants:
- Ivvone Zhou, a student from Bethesda, Maryland;
- Gregg Meller, a filmmaker from Los Angeles, California; and
- Grant DeYoung, a grocery clerk from Prescott, Arizona. Grant is a three-day champ with winnings of $67,202.
Jeopardy!
I'M GETTING DOJA VU // KIDS' LIT // THE GROUPER CHAT // WORDS THAT SHOULD RHYME // SANDWICH POTPOURRI // GARFIELD ON GARFIELD
DD1 - $800 - WORDS THAT SHOULD RHYME - A tart citrus fruit & an evil spirit (Gregg doubled to $2,000.)
Scores at first break: Grant $2,600, Gregg $4,600, Ivvone $1,600.
Scores entering DJ: Grant $2,600, Gregg $5,400, Ivvone $3,000.
Double Jeopardy!
TURKMENISTAN // DINO MOVIES // SAINTS // "COME" & "GO" // DEEP SPACE NIGHT // IT'S A DATE
DD2 - $800 - SAINTS - Upon canonization in 2016, Mother Teresa became St. Teresa of this city (Gregg added $1,000 to his score of $11,000 vs. $8,600 for Grant.)
DD3 - $800 - IT'S A DATE - Leon is Noel backwards & Leon Day is this date at the start of summer (On the very next clue after DD2, Gregg dropped $6,000 from his total of $12,000.)
The players did an amazing job of avoiding the DDs in DJ, then Gregg finally found them on back-to-back clues. With only lower-value clues remaining, Gregg could have wrapped up first place into FJ with a tiny bet, but instead wagered half his total, missed and wound up in third. Going into Final it was Grant with $8,200, Ivvone at $7,000 and Gregg with $6,800.
Final Jeopardy!
THE THEATER - Of the 14 roles in a production of this play that opened on Broadway on Oct. 28, 2004, none were played by females
Grant and Ivvone were correct on FJ, with Grant adding $5,801 to win with $14,001 for a four-day total of $81,203. Note that from a close third place, Gregg bet it all, giving up any chance of a potential Triple Stumper win.
Final scores: Grant $14,001, Gregg $0, Ivvone $14,000.
This day in shilling: After a typically long-winded guest-presented video category plugging "The Garfield Movie" in the first round, they wound up with two leftovers in DJ.
Triple Stumper of the day: Speaking of which, we had to wait quite some time to hear the important part at the end of a video clue about "rags to riches" author Horatio Alger.
Correct Qs: DD1 - What are lemon & demon? DD2 - What is Calcutta? DD3 - What is June 25? FJ -What is "12 Angry Men"?
