Politics Corner March 2

The fight against the Voting Rights Act is even dirtier than you think and is happening in unlikely places like Washington State. [ProPublica]

You win some, you lose some. Wisconsin's state gerrymander hasn't been fixed but it's much better than it was before. The Wisconsin congressional gerrymander remains in place. The Wisconsin Supremes won't touch it and there's no reason to expect help from the feds. I grew up in district one. It was a rectangle with the cities of Racine, Kenosha, Beloit and Janesville in the corners. The gerrymander carved Beloit out of the southwest corner and placed in district two where the Democrat votes would be diluted when joined with Madison. Janesville which is directly between the two remained in district one along with the addition of Republican leaning Waukesha suburbs and exurbs. Why move Beloit and not Janesville? Paul Ryan lived in Janesville. He could never win district two but he could win a gerrymandered district one. Why does this matter to you? If the Wisconsin congressional map had been drawn fairly it would Hakeem Jeffries with a slim lead in the House. [Associated Press]
