Our Top Pick tonight is the continuing 5-part science miniseries Nova: Ancient Earth (PBS, 9 p.m.). Produced by the BBC, Ancient Earth tells the billions-of-years-long story of how life came to be on the planet, from a barren rock to a frozen surface to the dawn of humans. I've been liking it a lot. Tonight's episode looks at a series of volcanic eruptions 252 million years ago that caused Earth's greatest extinction event ("The Great Dying") and how life managed to bounce back.
