What's On Tonight (Friday): Good Omens Returns with Bad Tidings...

Good Omens

It never seems like a good idea to take characters that pop in a show and try to give them their own show.  For every Jeffersons or Frasier there's a Joey or a Tortellis or a Joanie Loves Chachi or a Law and Order: Trial by Jury or a Law and Order: LA or a Law and Order: True Crime.  In 2019 Amazon premiered a supposedly "limited series" adaptation of the Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett authored Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch.  The series was pretty well received though it was definitely a "your mileage may vary" kind of thing.  The one thing everyone could seem to agree on was that David Tennant's Crowley and Michael Sheen's Aziraphale and their eons long unlikely friendship was the highlight of the series.

So, despite Pratchett being dead as a kipper on a cracker, Gaiman decided to pen a new season centered around everyone's favorite angel and demon.  It looks great, and Amazon is releasing all six episodes at once, so looks like it's a binging weekend for me.

TOP PICK

โญ๐Ÿ‘ผ๐Ÿ˜ˆ Good Omens (Amazon, 12:01 AM) SEASON TWO. 'Having been on Earth since The Beginning, and with the Apocalypse thwarted, the duo is getting back to easy living amongst mortals in Londonโ€™s Soho. That is, until the archangel Gabriel turns up unexpectedly at the door of Aziraphaleโ€™s bookshop with no memory of who he is or how he got there. While Crowley is leery as to why the archangel has come to the bookshop, Aziraphale is keen to solve the mystery behind Gabrielโ€™s condition. However, hiding the archangel from both Heaven and Hell quickly disrupts their lives in unforeseen ways. To solve this mystery and thwart Heaven and Hell in the process, the duo will need more than a miracle; theyโ€™ll need to once again rely on each other.'โœ”๏ธ

Elsewhere...

*I'm usually a pretty easy mark for animated comedies, but that said, I didn't laugh a single time at the trailer for Netflix's Captain Fall.  It's from the makers of Norsemen and has a pretty good voice cast (always happy to have Bebe Neuwirth in anything), so maybe it's just a bad trailer?  I even laughed at the trailer for that "idiot who becomes President after he defeats an alien invasion force" Netflix series called Mulligan, and I didn't make it past the first episode of that show!  How bad is Captain Fall to make me laugh less than fucking Mulligan?  I might just have to stream the first episode to satisfy my curiosity.

*The Futon Critic lists a new Netflix film that I can find no mention of on Netflix itself (or anyplace else).  The title is Love, Sex and 30 Candles, but I misread it as Love, Sex and 30 Crunches, which I think is a much better title.  What say you, Netflix?  You don't seem to be releasing it today so there's still time to correct your grievous error.

*Apple continues to produce films about the wonders and joys of corporate America.  Recently they've had comedies about the acquiring of Tetris and the invention of Flamin' Hot Cheetos.  Now we've got a film about the guy and company that created the Beanie Babies fad back in the 90's.  Weird that one of the richest corporations on the planet would constantly be producing comedies about the ups and downs (mostly the ups) of corporate America.  Whatever, I'll be binging Good Omens regardless.
