What's On Tonight (Sunday): That satisfied, Idol's a male fantasy

The Idol

Happy Father's Day! Here's what's on television for tonight, Sunday, June 18!

Our Top Pick tonight is The Idol (HBO & Max, 9 p.m.). This horrible show, which is supposedly set in Euphoria-verse, finds the rising pop star Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) amidst a revenge porn scandal, seeking refuge with cult leader/self-help guru Tedros (Abel Tesfaye, aka The Weeknd). It all plays out as big-budget misogyny, created by Tesfaye and Sam Levinson. ("What's wrong with [Tedros' vibe]?" "He's so... rape-y." "Yeah, I kinda like that about him.") All men have to do is talk to and be a little rough with women, and then they will always be satisfied! The Weeknd can't act, and despite a good supporting cast, the show is regressive and incapable of finding any sort of level-headed voice.

ElsewhereRidley comes out of retirement, Endeavour begins his curtain call, Lazarus reconsiders the enemy, Natasha Lyonne meets Eric Andre, the Great Food Truck Race returns, Brandon Jordan starts a Search Party, Rev. Al Sharpton is a Loudmouth, and a Righteous Gemstone is in semi-retirement.
