What's On Tonight: A Midwinter Night's Fever Dream...

Carnival Row

There is a lot to choose from this week.  We got a Spanish language western about the Robin Hood of the West, a new twisty-grifty film starring Julianne Moore and John Lithgow, a retro sci-fi series starring Billy Crudup and even the streaming premiere of Armageddon Time.  There's only one show I'm guaranteed to watch though, and that's the second and final season of Amazon's Carnival Row.

I'm not sure what the overall response was to the CR's first season.  Hell, it's been so long since the first season (over three years!) I'm hoping there is a generous recap because this show had a lot of stuff going on.  I can hear you asking, "But is it good?"  And I can hear myself responding, "I'm not sure."  Orlando Bloom is chewing scenery in a way he's never done in any of his films, but I enjoyed it because it fits how over the top the whole show is.  Cara Delevingne plays Bloom's fairy love interest and she's pretty perfectly cast because, say what you will about her acting abilities, she looks like a goddamn fairy.

Hopefully the true stars of the first season, the giant sets and great special effects, are still around.  I'm worried they might have endured some budget cuts to get this season made.  It would be a shame if they had less money to play with.  The one thing about the first season that I unabashedly praise was how fucking ballsy and unapologetic this fantasy show - that isn't based on any books or prior works - was coming right out of the gate.  I don't know if it's good, but I know what I like, or at least I know what keeps my attention for roughly 45-50 minutes.

PREMIERES

🧚‍♀️ Carnival Row (Apple, 12:01 AM) SEASON TWO PREMIERE (FINAL SEASON). 'Season 2 picks up with former inspector Philo investigating a series of gruesome murders which are stoking social tension. Vignette Stonemoss and the Black Raven - a group of vigilante faeries - plot payback for the unjust oppression inflicted by The Burgue's human leaders. Tourmaline inherits supernatural powers that threaten her fate and the future of The Row.  And, after escaping The Burgue and her vengeful brother Ezra, Imogen and her partner Agreus encounter a radical new society which upends their plans. '

Elsewhere...

*Apple has a that new movie with Moore and Lithgow AND the new retro sci-fi series.  The latter of which appears to be a blend of Mad Men, Glengarry Glen Ross and Tomorrowland.  Of course, Apple releases these things right after I cancelled my prescription.  I'll check them out when I renew to watch season two of Severance.

*HBO Max has a new animated series called Poor Devil.  I'd like to comment on it, but no one put out a trailer.  I know HBO is trying to cut costs left and right but how about throwing out a few bucks to have someone put together a goddamn trailer for your show?  You're gonna cost yourself a potential Top Pick bump right when you need it the most.

I've been binging Evil and Ghosts on Paramount+ and once I am done I will be putting that subscription into cryo-sleep for at least a year.  I might be tempted to stay around for a few more weeks if the new season of Picard is good, but the last season was just so terrible that I can't allow myself to hope again.
