Healthy eating has been on my mind this week.
Anything you read about healthy eating, unless it's something really nutty and fad-ish, generally comes down to 'eat lots of vegies, of a good variety'.
Here's an article about good brain food which ultimately comes down to "the same things that are good for your body are good for your brain".
Earlier this week, I was reading about how hard we find it to eat five serves of vege a day. Apparently only 6% of Australian adults manage it! I am definitely one of them. Especially with the cold weather here right - all summer, I was buying salads at lunch time, but now I keep gravitating to hot food and, around my office at least, that limits the amount of high-in-vege options.
That article had me scheming. It talks about the expense of fresh vegies right now, and that the frozen mixes of vegetables absolutely will do the job.
I like cooking, but I hate the chore of doing it daily. After work, I want quick and easy, and I'm happy to sacrifice a degree of taste and variety to make it easy.
So I thought, could I just steam up a bowl of frozen vegies and get through that each night? How much would that be, anyway? According to this, a serve is roughly 75 gm, or half a cup. So getting my five serves of vegetables in one bowl means 2 and a half cups of frozen vegie mix. That sounds massive. This may not be the solution I need!
Anyway, I'm still going to give it a try - not five nights a week, but as a once-in-a-while back up for times when I know I've been missing my quotas.
