What's On Tonight (Sunday): Be kind to her, she has cancer*! (*she doesn't)

I Love That for You

Happy Juneteenth! Here's what's on television for tonight, Sunday, June 19!

Our Top Pick tonight is the season finale of the delightful freshman comedy I Love That for You (Showtime, 7:30 p.m.). Joanna Gold (Vanessa Bayer) lands a job at shopping channel SVN, which is run by Jenifer Lewis, but only gets to stay by telling everyone a fake sob story about having cancer. Gold's been cancer-free for 20 years. A job and life story that is built on lies! She is mentored by Jackie Stilton (Molly Shannon) and feuds with Beth Ann McGann (Ayden Mayeri). The show is inspired by Bayer's real experience with childhood leukemia and obsession with QVC. The first two episodes are available for free on YouTube, and tonight's finale is already online, too.

ElsewhereAnimal Kingdom begins its final season, Ben Crump is on a mission, The Time Traveler still has a WifeYoung Dylan celebrates Juneteenth, memes are Evil, Birdgirl saves the new day, Hotel Portofino opens for business, Endeavour is still a thing, Elizabeth gets caught between Edward and Mary, and Billy the Kid picks a side.

STREAMING & EARLY PRIMETIME

πŸŽ₯ Civil: Ben Crump (Netflix, 3 a.m.): "Crump's mission to raise the value of Black life as the civil lawyer for the families of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Black farmers and banking while Black victims, Crump challenges America to come to terms with what it owes his clients."

Evil (Paramount+, 3 a.m.): "Kristen, David, and Ben investigate the internet’s horrors as they look into a Slender Man-style meme that scares teenagers into committing blasphemy to avoid death. Sheryl is taught the fine art of online trolling by Leland." (I think that synopsis is right.)

πŸ“Ί One Day at a Time (FreeVee / Pluto TV, now): While the excellent remake ended too soon (fuck you, Netflix), the original is also worth the time. Streaming, only the first 4 seasons are available, but I find the show about newly-divorced mom Bonnie Franklin with daughters Mackenzie Phillips and Valerie Bertinelli to be a great example of the culture shifts of the 1970s. It does get a bit to sitcom-y at times, especially in its latter years, but the leading ladies are fantastic in their roles. The show has worthwhile things to say about single parenting and adolescence.

Spotlights: A Showtime Short Film Series (Showtime, 7:30 p.m.): In Benevolent Ba, a woman's lust for virtue thrusts her family into a sacrificial slaughter... France Michelle is a Man's Name explores being a trans man in contemporary America... Raspberry follows a son struggling to say goodbye.
