What's On Tonight (Wednesday): Return of the sweet birthday baby

Russian Doll

Up and away, got a big day, sorry can't stay, I gotta run, run yeah! Here's what's on television for tonight, Wednesday, April 20!

Our Top Pick tonight is the long-awaited return of the comedy-ish Russian Doll (Netflix, 3 a.m.). The story picks up 4 years later with our favorite universe-hopping time-looper Nadia Vulvokov. Annie Murphy joins the cast, too. If it is like the trend of other lauded returnees, it will either rise to the occasion (Atlanta) or be forgotten in a few days (Master of None). To be determined: Barry.

Elsewhere, PBS checks up on our Changing Planet, Snowfall falls, Cypress Hill  and Freddie Mercury get documentary treatment, Fuse wants to Talk About America, Green Room closes, Netflix loves serial killers, Killer Mike celebrates 4/20, The Wonder Years gets tenure, and The Proud Family goes to Oklahoma.

(All times are Eastern. All listings are new unless otherwise stated. For more listings, visit The Futon Critic or Zap2it.)

STREAMING & EARLY PRIMETIME

πŸ“Ί Charmed (Roku, now): This show partly exists to see how little clothing the leading ladies (Shannen Doherty, Holly Marie Combs, Alyssa Milano, Rose McGowan) can wear and still be okay for broadcast TV. I still have a big soft spot for the shows early years as the sisters and learn about their powers and defeat a new evil every week. The Shannen Doherty seasons are the best ones. The show is also better than the Power of 3 remake currently on The CW. This original has more restraint in its storytelling.

Conversations with a Killer: The John Wayne Gacy Tapes (Netflix 3 a.m.): LIMITED SERIES. Netflix throws out another (unnecessary) limited series profiling a serial killer in its void.
