What's On Tonight (Thursday): A tale of violent faith

via Tumblr

Tonight’s Top Pick is the premiere of Under the Banner of Heaven, the miniseries based on Jon Krakauer’s account of a pair of 1984 murders discovered to be executed by two extremist Mormons. One murderer's deluded claim that a knife was so sharp, it allowed for his infant niece’s immediate death has stayed in my mind all these years.

Let’s see what TV has to offer us for Thursday, April 28. All times are EST. Because I’m writing in advance, information is limited in some cases.

STREAMING

Under the Banner of Heaven, 12:01 a.m., FX on Hulu. Series premiere. “When God Was Love” and “Rightful Place.” “Detectives Jeb Pyre (Andrew Garfield) and Bill Taba (Gil Birmingham) investigate the brutal, sinister murders of an LDS woman, Brenda Wright Lafferty (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and her baby daughter in Utah’s typically serene Salt Lake Valley in 1984.” Later, “With a lead suspect in custody, the investigation uncovers more ominous questions than answers as the hidden history of the once-admired Lafferty family is exposed.” Both episodes are written for TV by creator and co-executive producer Dustin Lance Black (or Mr. Tom Daley, as I like to think of him) and directed by David Mackenzie. Costarring Billy Howle as the widower and Sam Worthington and Wyatt Russell as the murderers.

The Offer, 3:01 a.m., Paramount+. Series premiere. “Oscar-winning producer Albert S. Ruddy’s never-before-revealed experiences of making The Godfather.” Miles Teller is Ruddy. Matthew Goode is Robert Evans. Dan Fogler is Francis Ford Coppola. Costarring Juno Temple, Giovanni Ribisi, Colin Hanks and Justin Chambers as Marlon Brando. Three episodes available.

Tokyo Vice, 3:01 a.m., HBO Max. Season finale. “Yoshino.”

The Way Down: God, Greed and the Cult of Gwen Shamblin, Part II, 3:01 a.m., HBO Max. Premiere. Wrapping up the story of that blonde woman who had too much hair and founded both a diet program and a church prior to her death last year. Two episodes available.

Made for Love, 3:01 a.m., HBO Max. Second season premiere. “A” and “B.” Return of the Cristin Milioti-starring series about a woman reasserting her independence after a long, stifling marriage. Costarring Billy Magnussen and Ray Romano. Two episodes available.

The Flight Attendant, 3:01 a.m., HBO Max. “The Reykjavik Ice Sculpture Festival Is Lovely This Time of Year” and “Blue Sincerely Reunion.” Two episodes available.

Julia, 3:01 a.m., HBO Max. “Foie Gras.” Season finale next week.

Star Trek: Picard, 3:01 a.m., Paramount+. Season finale next week.

TALKIN’ ‘BOUT TALK is not included this week, as I’m writing in advance and didn’t feel like updating to include guests.
