What's On Tonight (Saturday): A Piece of the action

One Piece (via this clip)

Holy limited television listings! Here's what's on television for tonight, Saturday, January 22!

Our top pick tonight is the return of One Piece (Adult Swim, 1:30 a.m.) to Toonami, a show that has garnered a raised profile since it left the lineup 5ish years ago. However, the long-running anime about Luffy and his Straw Hat Pirates crew searching for the world's ultimate treasure doesn't start from the beginning. Instead it starts with season 15, which is also where fans say the show became exceptionally good (and is a good entry point). If you wanna catchup with the earlier 14 seasons, you have 516 episodes to watch. To date, there are more than 1,000 episodes.

Elsewhere, MacGruber is live from New York, Bob Odenkirk is an action star, it is Kyle Richards Line, the Black Lotus is really lost, Duran Duran goes to the City Limit, and Made in Abyss seeks its robot's origin.

This Weekend in Pop Culture (9:30 p.m.): What pop culture have you consumed lately? This is our weekly thread for you talk about it.

Thoughts On (The Films of 1998) (9 a.m.): Slappy and the Stinkers.

STREAMING & EARLY PRIMETIME

A Discovery of Witches (Sundance Now, 3 a.m.): "In New Orleans, Matthew and Marcus struggle to reconnect with Marcus's children. In London, Diana and Phoebe find a lead in their hunt for the missing pages."

πŸ“Ί Frasier (Hulu / Paramount+ / Peacock, now): Before the revival arrives on Paramount+ later this year, revisit the Cheers spinoff about Dr. Frasier Crane and his radio show and family in Seattle that was on the air for too long and set Emmy records. It won Comedy Series 5 years in a row. Sadly, Eddie never won an Emmy.✔️

πŸŽ₯ The Wizard of Oz (HBO Max, now): I've long assumed this is the pre-'90s movie that most Americans have in common. Maybe even on an international level? I think it is about the closest that Hollywood has gotten to perfect. If I taught a film class, this is the movie I'd start with.

πŸ“Ί Batman (Decades): Holy criminal comedy, Batman! Spend the weekend with the classic 1960s Batman series and instant gratification. No waiting for part 2s. In this quintessential two-parter, Catwoman steals one of two priceless golden cat statuettes and captures Robin and sics a tiger on Batman when they try to protect the other. It's the purr-fect crime.

⭐ One Piece (Adult Swim, 1:30 & 2 a.m.): SEASON PREMIERE. After 5 years away, One Piece is back at Toonami! "After two years of rigorous training, the new and improved Straw Hats make their way to Sabaody Archipelago, but their long-awaited reunion is spoiled by a villainous gang of imposters." This is the start of season 15, which comprises the Fishman Island story arc. I've heard plenty of comments that this is a great entry point for new viewers and the show steps up its production values, too.
