Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts |
Happy New Year! Here's what's on television for tonight, Saturday, January 1!
Grab the butterbeer and pumpkin juice, our top pick tonight is the Hogwart reunion Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts (HBO Max, 3 a.m.), which reunites the Harry Potter cast 20 years since the first movie, though the guest list is full of people that got involved in the following movies. 20 years since the first movie; 10 years since the last movie; 24ish years since the first book. You might learn something, if you struggle with Jeopardy's Potter categories. [*coughJayScough*]
Elsewhere, the Doctor gets an extension, ABC burns off Helen Mirren, Lifetime gets Deadly, Dr. Jova is on call, Ghost Hunters is back, Yashashime has a finale showdown, Rob Lowe remembers The '80s, and Crikey the Irwins are back.
(All times are Eastern. All listings are new unless otherwise stated. For more listings, visit The Futon Critic or Zap2it.)

This Weekend in Pop Culture (9:30 p.m.): What pop culture have you consumed lately? This is our weekly thread for you talk about it.
STREAMING & EARLY PRIMETIME
๐บ Date with the Angels (YouTube, now): This short-lived late-midseason replacement about the Angels, new bride Vickie (Betty White) and her insurance salesman husband Gus (Bill Williams) was a disaster critically and commercially. Promos didn't sell the show either. But you can still find episodes on YouTube.
๐บ The Golden Girls (Hulu, now): Betty White becomes a star of the 1980s in this show about older women enjoying life's latter act. The Golden Palace arrives on Hulu on Jan. 10.✔️
⭐ Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts (HBO Max, 3 a.m.): SPECIAL. The legendary cast returns to where the magic started to celebrate the anniversary of the beloved franchise's first film. It is odd that this reunion includes many, many people who weren't in the first movie. Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes, Evanna Lynch, Gary Oldman, Imelda Staunton? Nope. Directors Alfonso Cuarรณn, Mike Newell, and David Yates? Definitely Not. Oh well. The more the wizardry-er.
๐บ Hot in Cleveland (Paramount+, now): In this Golden Girls update and TV Land's first scripted sitcom, Betty White was only going to be in the first episode, but producers liked her performance so well, she became a series regular.
๐บ Ladies Man (Crackle, now): Betty White played mom in this short-lived and mostly forgotten Alfred Molina-led CBS sitcom. Crackle only has season one.
๐บ Life with Elizabeth (Pluto TV, now): In her first sitcom, Betty White starred alongside Del Moore in this early 1950s syndicated series. It even garnered her an Primetime Emmy Award nomination.
