1999: BMI publishes their list of the most-played songs on American radio and TV in the 20th century. The Top 5:

1978: Billy Joel plays Madison Square Garden for the first time, which growing up he considered a "temple."
December 15
1992: Dr. Dre releases his debut solo album, The Chronic, a G-funk landmark featuring Snoop Doggy Dogg.
December 16
1993: Nirvana's Unplugged concert airs on MTV. A rare look at the band in an acoustic setting, it is one of Kurt Cobain's last performances, as he is found dead less than four months later.
December 17
1989: The Simpsons debuts on Fox with the episode "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire." The show quickly attracts big-name guest stars, including many musicians. In Season 3, Michael Jackson, Sting and Aerosmith appear.

1943: Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards is born in Dartford, Kent, England.

1980: 9 to 5, starring Dolly Parton and featuring the classic theme song by the singer (where she uses her fingernails as an instrument), opens in theaters. Parton, in her first acting role, stars alongside Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda as disgruntled secretaries who get even with their sexist boss.
