Emmy Award (via Giphy) |
Welcome to the 2021 Creative Arts Emmy Awards post! This post will cover all the categories of the three ceremonies that comprise this year's Creative Arts Emmys.
The host-less ceremonies will be combined and shortened into a single program that will air next Saturday on FXX.
2021 CREATIVE ARTS EMMY AWARDS
Saturday Recap: The Queen's Gambit will not go quietly. Despite being months since the guilds rallied around the Netflix limited series this winter and plenty of new contenders thrown against it, The Queen's Gambit remains an awards force, winning seven technical Emmys. WandaVision won two Emmys, diminishing its chances next week at the big ceremony. Saturday Night Live, The Mandalorian, and Pose all made notable showings winning three each. There were modest surprises, such as A Black Lady Sketch Show ending a Last Week Tonight streak and The Handmaid's Tale not winning production design. Hamilton also walked away empty-handed, and Ted Lasso won in editing and sound mixing, which are the better tea-leave Creative Arts categories in prediction the big winners next week.
Sunday Afternoon Recap: The nonfiction and documentary categories RuPaul's Drag Race picked up four Emmys and RuPaul now has 10 Emmys. Queer Eye repeated as a top program but won nothing else. The Social Dilemma got love from writers and Dick Johnson Is Dead from directors. Primal and Love, Death & Robots won the top animation awards. Maya Rudolph repeated her voiceover win. David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet won three awards, and Life Below Zero is still the prime cinematography choice.
Sunday Evening Recap: Ted Lasso, The Crown, and The Queen's Gambit are the shows to beat next week. They won casting Emmys and previously won editing. Bo Burham won three Emmys for his comedy special. SNL can still rack up the awards (Maya repeats again), and The Mandalorian is good at the technical crafts. Plus voters still love karaoke in cars, for some reason. On the other hand, The Handmaid's Tale and Allen v. Farrow both end the weekend empty-handed, and the latter isn't up for anything next week.
PROGRAM
The terrible Dolly Parton movie won its top prize and Carpool Karaoke's winning streak is stretched to a fourth year. James Cameron won another Emmy as the producer for Nat Geo's Secrets of the Whales. Boys State pulls off an upset, beating The Social Dilemma and The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, which both had technical awards. Stanley Tucci won his fourth Emmy, this time for his CNN series. It beat United Shades of America, which migrated from the unstructured category. FYI: RuPaul's Drag Race Untucked is the after-show.

CASTING
The comedy casting winner has gone on to win comedy series for the past six years. The previous four years display that the casting branch didn't favor Modern Family, which only won casting in its first season. The Crown won casting in 2018 but lost the program award to Game of Thrones. However, drama casting is only about 50/50 in the past decade. For LAS/M, the casting category has predicted a program winner 14 of the last 17 years.
RuPaul's Drag Race repeated.
Comedy Series: Ted Lasso
Drama Series: The Crown
Limited or Anthology Series, Movie or Special: The Queen's Gambit

CINEMATOGRAPHY
Country Comfort, a Netflix show I'm not sure anyone watched, won. This is the category The Ranch won three times. The Crown won for the first time in three years -- previous winner Mrs. Maisel sat out this cycle. The Mandalorian won for half-hour, though another episode was also nominated as a one-hour. The Television Academy needs to tweak its runtime rules. David Attenborough: A Life On Our Planet continues the nonfiction trend of a documentary winning, not an episode of a series. Life Below Zero three-peats.

Single-Camera Series (One Hour): The Crown, "Fairytale"

EDITING
This was The Conners' first Emmy. A Black Lady Sketch Show ended Last Week Tonight's five-year streak. The Crown won in its first time with an editing nomination. In editing, this category is 7 for 9 in picking the top drama series winner. It's 2 for 3 in comedy series in recent years but then you must go back to 2010 to find a match; Veep never won editing. Editing is 6 for 8 in recent years in picking the limited series or movie winner. RuPaul's Drag Race repeated.
Drama Series: The Crown, "Fairytale"
Single-Camera Comedy Series: Ted Lasso, "The Hope That Kills You"

The Good Lord Bird follows a tradition of a show where title design was its only Emmy nomination and win -- Godfather of Harlem, Counterpart, Manhattan.
Main Title Design: The Good Lord Bird
Motion Design: Calls
MAKEUP
The Mandalorian won for its episode that introduced live-action Ahsoka Tano. Saturday Night Live returns as a makeup winner after losing last year to Drag Race. Of note, Pose jumping forward a couple years between seasons two and three allowed the show move from the period to contemporary category.

PRODUCTION DESIGN
It's a year of the limited series! The four-year reign of The Handmaid's Tale came to an end with Mare of Easttown's win. The Queen's Gambit defeats incumbent winners The Crown and The Mandalorian, the latter was nominated in half-hour last year. (Fun fact: Between 2014 and 2020, the only limited series to win an Emmy in this craft was Chernobyl.) Saturday Night Live five-peats. The Oscars repeats.
Contemporary (One Hour or More): Mare of Easttown
Period or Fantasy (One Hour or More): The Queen's Gambit
Program (Half-Hour): WandaVision
Variety, Reality or Competition Series: Saturday Night Live, "Host: Kristen Wiig"
Variety Special: The Oscars
SOUND EDITING
Love, Death & Robots becomes the first animated series (I think) to win a sound editing Emmy, and just as most notable as a short form series -- the episode clocks in at 18 minutes with credits.
Comedy or Drama Series (One Hour): Lovecraft Country, "Sundown"
Comedy or Drama Series (Half-Hour) and Animation: Love, Death & Robots, "Snow in the Desert"
Limited or Anthology Series or Movie: The Queen's Gambit, "End Game"
Nonfiction or Reality Program: The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart
SOUND MIXING
Last year's half-hour winner The Mandalorian jumped categories with an episode that qualified for an hour. David Byrne's American Utopia defeated Hamilton. The David Attenborough documentary beat music docs about Billie Eilish and The Bee Gees for a win, and for the first time in a few years, the nonfiction/reality sound editing and sound mixing aren't aligned.
Comedy or Drama Series (One Hour): The Mandalorian, "Chapter 13: The Jedi"
Comedy or Drama Series (Half-Hour) and Animation: Ted Lasso, "The Hope That Kills You"
Limited Series or Anthology Series, Movie or Special: The Queen's Gambit, "End Game"
Variety Series or Special: David Byrne's American Utopia
Nonfiction or Reality Program: David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet

The category was shaken up this season, separating awards for an episode versus a full season. The Mandalorian still pulled off a win. Star Trek: Discovery won its second Emmy and first in special effects.
Season or Movie: The Mandalorian
Single Episode: Star Trek: Discovery, "Su'kal"
STUNTS
The stunt branch remerged its coordination categories into one and added an award for the stunt performers. The Mandalorian, which won a coordination award last year, claimed both.
Coordination: The Mandalorian
Performance: The Mandalorian, "Chapter 16: The Rescue"
TECHNICAL DIRECTION, CAMERAWORK, VIDEO CONTROL
Last Week Tonight three-peat-ed with its episode that ended 2020.
Series: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, "730"
Special: Hamilton
WRITING
