Occasional cooks: back to lockdown

Here is your weekly thread to talk anything and everything food.

Share what you're cooking this week, ask for tips or recipes for a dish, tell us about your meals out.

With our snap five-day lockdown just extended by a week, it's back to lockdown cooking - a seesaw between fuck-it comfort food and I will master this recipe! experimenting.

I still haven't attempted bread, but it would definitely be home mad if I tried.

Here's a selection of lockdown comfort-foods. I'm enjoying the writing in this.

For a green peppercorn sauce, 'grate half a small brown onion into a hot frypan with 1 tablespoon each of vegetable oil, butter and green peppercorns. Let them get acquainted before pulling off the heat and adding 2 very generous tablespoons of brandy. Let it heat and steam while you inhale.'.

'It is crucial a Zoom snack meets the following key criteria: it must leave no crumbs on your camera-facing top half, it can easily be hidden in one hand and it must be soft enough to be swallowed at a moment's notice without you spluttering at the screen.'

If you're looking for something a bit more gourmet and polished, this honey and cardamom cheesecake looks amazing, and also seems pretty easy to make.

And here's a bit more information about cardamom, one of my favourite spices. This mentions that it is the third-most expensive spice, after saffron and vanilla. No kidding, I bought some at the bulk store recently, and it was $250 a kilo.

What's happening in your kitchen this week?
