Totally Tunes: It's Showtime!

I've been having this article on reserve for a long time, mostly because I feel I could add more songs, or maybe because I feel I've already done it? Let me know if I have and this is a repeat (hope not). Anyways, Broadway! Most of y'all here really like musical theater, and that's great! I'm not much of a theater person, but every once in a while I listen to some some cast albums, or watch one of those bootlegs slime videos on YouTube, and it's a lot of fun... while not exactly fun I'd partake in as a hobby, but still. In honor of y'all theater fans, and the insane efforts theater cast/crew put in every show, here's this long-awaiting article.

Oh, no, what a shocker, Cats is there. Via Pexels

I'll start with possibly my favorite musical theater song ever, an ode to weird, torture-prone women like me and Miss Trunchbull, performed here and in the Brit version by the magnificent Bertie Carvel and written by renowned comedian Tim Minchin. I just absolutely love this song, and having seen it live (cough slime cough) it's a tremendous live feat.

Let's move to something much, more more known. Known as in "this musical was everywhere when it came out, and won like 454522 Tonys for years in a row" known. Yes, of course I'm talking about a The Book of Mormon song. But which one, you may ask? Well, I love most of the soundtrack, but this particular tune about hiding your homosexuality is GOLDEN.

Speaking of joyously gay stuff, why not some Hedwig and the Angry Inch? Neil Patrick Harris took the lead role on the musical a few years ago and, even though I'm not a big fan of the guy, he really nailed all the songs, especially this beautiful tune that just brings a tear to my eye every damn time.

Let's go for something more folksy and twee now, thanks to Steve Martin's magic, which scurried its way into Broadway and gave us Bright Star. Here's the title song. Bluegrass on Broadway! Broadgrass!

And just because I don't want to close with anything from Cats because really why would I, here's the Mary Poppins musical. You can actually see the performance in the embedded video! Though only a bit of it because that's Disney for you. My crackpot eyes initially saw John Mulaney playing Bert in the thumbnail... imagine that!

What's your favorite song from a Broadway musical? Imaginary internet points to whoever comments with a Cabaret tune!
