What's On Tonight (Sunday): Don't call her Miranda or Fleabag... or Blossom

Call Me Kat

[*looks at camera*] Hello, TV land! Here's what's on television for tonight, Sunday, January 3!

With TV back in gear with plenty of new episodes and premieres, tonight's Top Pick is Fox's new sitcom Call Me Kat, a remake of the British hit Miranda. Blossom is all grown up now and like predecessor Miranda, Kat, a single 39-year-old who opens a cat cafรฉ๐Ÿฑ, frequently talks to viewers, letting them know she's in on the jokes.

Elsewhere, Discovery networks preview some Discovery+ programs, Glenda Jackson searches for a friend, misfit cops are on the beat, The Great North previews, Mike and Vanessa jump through time, Jimmy Carter loves music, NCISes are on cases again, The Rookie is a junior, and WWHL kicks off season 18.

STREAMING & EARLY PRIMETIME

People hounded by conspiracy theorists fight back online; 2. a man imprisoned more than 22 years is freed in late 2019, months after the ⚖️U.S. Supreme Court⚖️ threw out the last of his several convictions in a quadruple murder case; 3. a profile of pianist Igor Levit.

The series will be available on Discovery+, which launches Monday.

First Man ๐ŸŽฅ (FX, 8 p.m.): ✈️๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿป‍✈️๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿป⚰️๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿป‍๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜ญ๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿš€๐ŸŒ‘๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป (๐Ÿฅฑ) + 40 minutes of commercials.

⭐ Call Me Kat (Fox, 8 p.m.): SERIES PREMIERE. "Kat's former crush and good friend returns to town." The premise sounds a lot like Fleabag, but Miranda did several Fleabag things before Fleabag, though it refined such devices. But not Hot Priest. The cast includes vets Leslie Jordan and Swoosie Kurtz as well as Cheyenne Jackson as the romantic interest. I'd like this to succeed, but being on Fox ๐Ÿ™€ gives me little hope. Will there be points?๐Ÿ˜ผ✔️

The Great North (Fox, 8:30 p.m.): SERIES PREMIERE. This is the first episode of Fox's latest animation project, this time about an odd family living in ❄️Alaska❄️. "The family's plans to celebrate Judy's 16th birthday on the family fishing boat go awry after a moose breaks into the Tobins' home." The show won't air regularly for several more weeks, which will certainly include a trip to Cecily, right?✔️

How Did They Build That? (Smithsonian Channel, 9 p.m.): SERIES PREMIERE. I'm guessing this is the network's answer to How It's Made.

In the Long Run (Starz, 9 p.m.): SEASON PREMIERE. Did you catch up with this '80s-set British comedy starring Idris Elba on Saturdays this fall? It was in my listings!! Now, Starz adds it to its Sunday lineup with the season three premiere, which aired last summer across the pond. "A big change is coming for Walter as his mother comes to London. Vanessa and Mandy clash over Vanessa's "helpfulness," and Chuck desperately hopes it's last call on Ed's mixology happy hour.๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿ‘ง‍๐Ÿ‘ง

NCIS: New Orleans (CBS, 9:30 p.m.): The team investigates a suspicious death and the missing key piece of evidence is a top secret, high-tech battery. Pride and the team realize there could be deadly consequences if it falls into the wrong hands. If they didn't think that was possible before, they are in the wrong profession.
