Even though I'm about a week late, recently there was a big celebration and everything in the name of the famous, incredibly talented, late musician David Bowie for the anniversary of his birth AND death (he died around his birthday, the madman), and it got me thinking of the many times artists covered or paid tribute to Bowie in their tunes. We usually have one or two Bowie songs in the articles and/or comments sections for this column, so why not highlighting the many times he was paid tribute for this one?
A classic, via Giphy |
You know Bowie was referenced in several movies? Not only that Jackie Jormp Jomp-like biopic that was done recently, but also in musicals like Moulin Rouge! and others (except Velvet Goldmine, for obvious reasons). In the last category, we have this 2011 teenage melodrama where his hit "Life on Mars?" was performed by a don't say stupidly handsome don't say stupidly handsome Olivier Award winning talent.
One of the latest tributes to Bowie featured a big pool of talents, each one giving their spin of classic tunes of the man himself. Here's "Starman" from said tribute show.
"Heroes" was done by a wide amount of artists, from Oasis and Depeche Mode, to that trash nepotism band of Bob Dylan's kid, but the cover that always got me was Kasabian's, as its arrangement has absolutely ZERO deepness, zero positivity, it's just a classic done in an inessential Kasabian way.
Even the songs that Bowie did in collaboration with others got covers, like this My Chemical Romance and The Used collaboration on Queen and Bowie's "Under Pressure":
Not only covers can be tributes, sometimes there's literal songs written about the subjects, like the one I referenced in this article's title. Yes, Whistler's Totally Tunes' etiquette states the song that gives the article its title goes first... but Aneurin, man. Sorry, Conchords.
To close, let's go with the man himself, because why the hell not? Happy belated birthday, Bowie.
What's your favorite David Bowie cover or tribute? What band/artist you'd want them to do a Bowie cover?
