Totally Tunes: We Don't Need Another Song About California

What is it with artists and the imperious need to talk about certain states in songs? We did a New York Totally Tunes not that long ago, and it got me thinking what other state is usually present in songs, with California popping up immediately. If I had to guess, it's because the glitz, glamour, and Hollywood are there, or maybe because it's fun to say Califoooooorniaaaaaaaaa in a melodic way?

Anyways, this isn't an article created to complain, but one to highlight that the California wildfires are still rampant and leaving thousands without a home, with over two million acres having been lost to the fire this year alone. Here's a list of vetted response funds you can direct resources to, and help both people and animals survive this terrible season.

Back to the music, I'll start the article with the song that inspired the subtitle, this My Chemical Romance bonus track that's quite the rockin' tune:

This Mamas and the Papas tune was, for a long time, confused for a Beach Boys song due to the latter covering it, and somewhat entering pop culture. Thankfully, when I now searched for the song on YouTube, the original kept popping up (and the weird Sia cover she did for San Andreas). So, here's the Beach Boys version because I'm evil like that.

Let's talk punk with this awesome, and still politically relevant, Dead Kennedys tune mocking then California governor Jerry Brown's presidential bid, thus giving us golden lines like "jog for the master race" or "they're coming for your uncool niece".

This tune is a love song to the Californian city the artist was born in, kinda like a melancholic looking-back to it all.

And, of course, if we're taking California, there cannot be a mention of Red Hot Chili Peppers, who have made the state a recurring meme related to them. This song happens to be a diss at consumerism, pop culture, and the superficiality of it all, and it's also one of their most famous tracks.

What's your favorite song about California? Do you think we need more, or less songs about the state?
