Totally Tunes: All About the Curves

Body positivity is a big thing right now, and I like it. Especially because most times it's not as if you can change how your body turns out as you grow older, and it sucks to have the media and such telling you you're a failure because you're not fitting an specific ideal. Most of my students choose to investigate stuff about body positivity and plus-size fashion for my course's projects, and I'm learning a lot about it thanks to them, which is fantastic! So let's give it up for curves on today's article!

Let's begin with this very fun MIKA tune that was everywhere when I was in high school. All my larger-inclined friends were ecstatic at having a positive song about weight!

Brian May got to delight everyone in the late 70's with this bop about girls with ample bottoms, which is still a staple on Queen live shows as every single vocalist the band had ADORES going wild with the lyrics.

Speaking of big trunks, I cannot NOT include the ode to ample butts, right? Sir Mix-A-Lot wrote it to be a complaint about the body types shown by the media in the 90's (mostly very skinny white women) which left behind curvy women, especially African-American women.

While we're in complaint songs, Kelly Clarkson wrote this tune as a retort to media always focusing on her weight and figure, turning all that buzz into a body-positive song for whole lotta women!

For the closer, I'm leaving you with this Bruno Mars ditty, which also praises voluptuous women who are independent, stylish, and most importantly, curvy.

What's your favorite song about body positivity? What body type you think hasn't gotten a lot of praise in music?
