Ah, the city that never sleeps. Even after a bout with COVID-19, New York City keeps being one of the world's most popular tourist destinations, or at least that's what I'm reading on several tourist blogs and social media sites, which I'm guessing it's because of all those lean buildings, rampaging taxis, loads of pizza places, and the chance to see Mr. Mistofelees shake its ass at you LIVE! on Broadway. New York is so famous, that plenty of artists have written songs about the city, an inspiration like no other. Today, we talk about those tunes.

As usual, I'm gonna begin this article with the song referenced in the title, a simple, yet absolutely lovely tune by The Milk Carton Kids:
The song that was initially going to be referenced in the article's title was going to be this very short, very fun Conor Oberst track, which was the one that inspired me to write this piece.
Debbie Harry contributed to this Moby song about the great city, the only single from his 2006 compilation album, and it's quite the bop, even though it didn't make a splash on the charts:
This was one of The Wombats' breakout songs, if not THE breakout song, of their career. You may have heard it in various pieces of popular culture, including one of the best episodes of The Inbetweeners.
So, I've been choosing deep cuts to let y'all share the more famous NYC songs in the comments, but I can't really close this without including the iconic Kander & Ebb tune... feel free to share any of the 43728373 cover versions made in the comments.
What's your favorite song about New York City? If you live there or have visited, do you think it's well represented in music?
