What's On Tonight (Saturday): Better call Frankie

Frankie Drake Mysteries (via Tumblr)
Howdy and welcome to the always quiet Saturday What's On Tonight. The Top Pick this week (there aren't many options) goes to the ladies of Drake Private Detectives. Yep, it's the Canadian procedural Frankie Drake Mysteries, which gets its first run in the States on Ovation. I know it from late night airings on my PBS station, occasionally right before classic Doctor Who. Frankie and company work in 1920s Toronto investigating crimes of various sorts. It's an okay show, at times entertaining. Elsewhere, the Not Ready for Primetime Players stay at home for one final episode this season, the Danger Force tries to save their city while quarantined, Downton expects some VIPs, Keeley Hawes is investigated, Toonami begins reairing Mob Psycho 100, and Oxygen asks if deaths were accident, suicide, or murder. Live on the Internet it's what's on television for tonight, Saturday, May 9!

STREAMING / EARLY PRIMETIME

Doctor Who ðŸ“º (Retro TV, 6 p.m.): On Ribos, the exiled Emperor of Levithia seeks a piece of the rare element jethrik. At the same time, the Doctor and Romana look for the first segment of the powerful Key to Time, disguised as the same jethrik piece.

⭐ Frankie Drake Mysteries (Ovation, 7 p.m.): When a toy store owner is the target of an harassment campaign, the gang — Frankie and her business partner Trudy plus the Mary, a city morality officer, and Flo, a pathologist at the city morgue — goes undercover at a telephone exchange to nab the culprit. Not always the highest of stakes in this procedural, but that's okay. Though for being set in the 1920s, the show looks good, but it is a fantasy 1920s that is very family friendly rather than rough around the edges — characters too. If you are into lighter TV, this might be your cup of tea. (I prefer this Frankie. And this one.)

Tour of Duty ðŸ“º (Heroes & Icons, 7 p.m.): When Purcell's father had a heart attack in Honolulu, Ruiz and Taylor change their R&R to Honolulu to give Purcell support. They are confronted by the anti-war attitudes and demonstrations back home.

FOR THE RECORD: Accident, Suicide or Murder (Oxygen, 6 p.m., premiere); J-Style Trip (Netflix, 3 a.m.); The King: Eternal Monarch (Netflix, 3 a.m.); Rugal (Netflix, 3 a.m.)✔️

🕗 EASTERN / 🕖 CENTRAL

Ace in the Hole ðŸŽ¥ (TCM, 8 p.m.): In this excellent 1951 Billy Wilder film, former big city journalist Kirk Douglas, now stuck working for an Albuquerque newspaper, exploits a story about a man trapped in a cave to rekindle his career, but the situation quickly escalates out of control. The gullibility of the public, manipulation by the press, failure of government institutions... this movie was ahead of its time.

Danger Force (Nickelodeon, 8 p.m.): In a quarantine episode entitled "Quaran-kini," the team stays at home and tries to set a good example when Swellview is quarantined from a way-too-natural gas leak from the nearby Bhutt Factory. Captain Man gets restless and becomes determined to find out who exactly is "behind" the leak. The jokes just write themselves.

Downton Abbey ðŸŽ¥ (HBO, 8 p.m.): In the biggest thriller of the year, Downton is on edge as they prepare for... a visit from the Royal family. I recommend it for fans of TV series.✔️

Maternal Secrets ðŸŽ¥ (Lifetime, 8 p.m.): While on vacation in Bermuda, a pregnant woman searches the island for her politician boyfriend when he mysteriously disappears.

Thunderball ðŸŽ¥ (Outdoor Channel, 8 p.m.): James Bond goes to the Bahamas to recover two nuclear warheads stolen by a SPECTRE agent in an extortion scheme. I am more puzzled why this is airing on the Outdoor Channel. James Bond doesn't catch bad guys from his bedroom!

FOR THE RECORDDateline NBC (NBC); Dr. Oakley, Yukon Vet (Nat Geo Wild, finale)

🕘 EASTERN / 🕗 CENTRAL

Cannon ðŸ“º (Decades, 9 p.m.): Spend the weekend with the big guy, who of course works for Quinn Martin, and a theme song with some excellent brass. In this episode, framed for a murder he didn't commit, a police detective begs Cannon to find out who the real killer is.✔️

This Weekend in Pop Culture (WOT&Pop Culture, 9:30 p.m.): What pop culture have you consumed lately?

Line of Duty (AMC, 11 p.m.): PREMIERE. The excellent second series begins when a brutal ambush leaves three officers dead and a witness fighting for his life. This time, Keeley Hawes is under suspicion.✔️

💤💤😴💤💤

Black Clover (Adult Swim, 1:30 a.m.): Nozel's Mercury spells are the perfect match for Patry's Light Magic, but Asta's plan to drive the elf out of Vangeance's body doesn't go as expected.

Cyanide & Happiness (Syfy, 1:30 a.m.): A woman's pet is suffering... a man talks to Jesus... a man advertises his crime fighting.

Dr. Havoc's Diary (Syfy, 1:19 & 2:11 a.m.): Dr. Havoc brings his teenage daughter with him to a weapons deal. Later, Dr. Havoc joins up with his old villain buddies for a night out on the town.

Gary and His Demons (Syfy, 1:06 a.m.): After finding out the demon Fleshler might still be alive, Gary recounts the story behind the death of his true love, Janine.

Harley Quinn (Syfy, 12:30 a.m.): While this DC Universe import is airing several episodes on Sunday night, it airs one per week on late Saturdays, so this is where I'll list it. In the first episode, Harley Quinn has finally broken things off with the Joker and tries to make it on her own as Gotham City's criminal queenpin. With the help of a ragtag crew of DC castoffs, she tries to get a seat at the biggest table in villainy, the Legion of Doom.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind (Adult Swim, 2 a.m.): In attempting to defend herself, Trish awakens her Stand. The Boss tries to pinpoint the team's location.

Lost in Space ðŸ“º (MeTV, 1 a.m.): On their next planetary stop, the Robinsons encounter a hermit who plans to attack the Jupiter 2 with his army.

Mob Psycho 100 (Adult Swim, 1 a.m.): This is notice that this Toonami is reairing this anime's first season. Maybe season two will follow soon.✔️

My Hero Academia (Adult Swim, midnight): After his encounter with Gentle Criminal and La Brava, Izuku races back to the school festival to perform in 1-A's musical showcase.

Naruto: Shippuden (Adult Swim, 2:30 a.m.): Naruto is overcome by the Ama no Hoko's power and lies unconscious, when the real Nine Tails offers to lend him strength.
