What's On Tonight (Friday): "The Great," A Wacky Comedy About Catherine The Great, Premieres

Via Tumblr

A Wacky Comedy About Catherine the Great?!?!?!? Well I've always said that any subject could make a good comedy if done right but this seems like a longshot for comedic material, but its created and exec produced by the same guy who wrote the screenplay for The Favourite and a lot of you guys seemed to like that one soooo maybe it'll be good???? (I don't know!) This is What's On for May 15th 2020.

Streaming

The Great (Hulu): Top Pick is this brand spanking new genre bending series (Comedic Historical Fiction!!!)  airing on Hulu and starring Elle Fanning as Catherine the Great and Nicholas Hoult as Peter the 3rd.  Will it actually be comedic??? Only time will tell!

Seberg (Amazon): Not to be outdone but Amazon has a movie biopic on actress Jean Seberg starring Kristin Stewart as well as Anthony Mackie, Zazie Beats, and Jack O'Connell. This was actually released briefly in NYC and LA last September because Amazon thought they could get some Oscar attention for Stewart's performance but it didn't work out for them.

The Last Narc (Amazon): A 4 part documentary series about drug trafficking and is apparently recommended for fans of Narcos and this is a real life version I guess???

White Lines (Netflix): New series about a woman named Zoe who travels to Ibiza Spain to investigate her brother's sudden disappearance. Its a British production but shot in Spain. Starring Laura Haddock, Daniel Mays, and Laurence Fox

The Unremarkable Juanquini (Netflix): New Spanish language comedy series is about a struggling magician who pulls off the trick of his life when he manages to disappear a wanted criminal during a police raid.  (Netflix has this categorized as "absurdist" and "goofy" as well as "teen drama" so that should give you an idea of its tone I guess?)

Inhuman Resources (Netflix):  New French language drama series is about a 57 year old looking for work who gets an attractive job offer, but soon realizes that he's actually a pawn in some sort of cruel corporate game being waged by management. (This one is categorized as being "Gritty" and "Dark" and is also based on a book apparently!)

I Love You Stupid (Netflix): Maybe my favorite title of the night is this Spanish language film about a guy whom after being dumped by his girlfriend asks his childhood best friend to help him become a spiritual guru. (OK but where does the "Stupid" part come into play here???)

Magic For Humans (Netflix): Street magician Justin Willman does a reality show here where he goes around performing tricks and illusions for people on the street (So its like a series version of those David Blaine specials that used to run periodically on tv)

Defending Jacob (Apple TV): This series continues to roll out new weekly episodes.

Reno 911 (Quibi): As loathe as I am to advertise something on Quibi, i thought it worth noting that the ongoing reboot of Reno 911 actually comes to a conclusion with tonight's episode. (Maybe those of us not technologically adept can see it somewhere else in the near future??? If any of Quibi's shows were to get seen elsewhere, I gotta imagine it would be this right?)

Broadcast

Greatest Stay At Home Viral Videos (CBS): Substituting for MacGyver tonight is this hour long filler hosted by Cedric the Entertainer. (He's a good company man!!!) and well Viral Videos... can never have too many of those on tv I guess.

The Blacklist (NBC): Finishing out its 7th season---even tho it is finishing 3 episodes early unfortunately--is this venerable James Spader led espionage show (It feels a little weird calling it a drama honestly) Tonight they try to take down The Kazanjian Brothers whomever they are. Hopefully they'll be an ending of some sort but I don't expect the various plotlines they've been diligently setting up all season to be all tied up since again this was not originally planned to be a season finale episode.

Shark Tank (ABC): A solution to help babies sleep thru the night; a personalized body care spread; a plant based alternative for a favorite comfort food; a stylish version of a comfortable outdoor accessory; Daniel Lubetzky guest judges. (I believe this is also a season finale--it says Season 11, Episode 24) (Has it really been on for 11 years now???) (Yep started in August of 2009! Huh!) (This will also be the show's 246th episode for those of you keeping count!)

Friday Night Smackdown (FOX): Hockey Mike--your weekly reminder that it is Friday is here!

Masters of Illusion (The CW): Season 7 of this regular summer filler staple premieres tonight with two back to back brand new episodes to fill out the 8 o'clock hour!

RuPaul's Drag Race (VH1): season 12 episode 12 of the show airs---The contestants must perform a medley of songs from a hit show on the Vegas Strip titled "RuPaul's Drag Race Live!" (Gee what great synergy!) Choreographer Jamal Simms guest judges. (He choreographed the stage show of Aladdin apparently)

A Christmas Detour (Hallmark): Candace Cameron Bure must get a ride from some guy she meets at the airport when their flight is cancelled. Will love bloom along the way? (I hope not!)

9:00

Bravery and Hope---7 Days on the Front Line (CBS): New hour long special about first responders at various hospitals across the country. (CBS? CBS? CBS?)

Dateline (NBC):

20/20 (ABC):

Magic Tricks Explained (The CW): Hosted by Dean Cain!!!!!! (well someone had to host this right?)

Great Performances (PBS): Leonard Bernstein's Mass performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra joined by the Highland Park High School Marching Band.  (PBS! PBS! PBS!)

Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives (Food): Four chefs previously featured on this show share some ingredients for the most "off the wall" recipes that they can think up. (I'm guessing off the wall recipes that will also be edible as well) (This is another quarantined edition of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives!!)

Gold Rush (Discovery):

 10:00

Blue Bloods (CBS): Rerun from January that finds a grieving widow blaming Frank for the suicide of her husband (Lets see you try to talk your way outta this one Mustached Man!)  Eddie tries to solve a mystery of her own in the precinct. ("A mystery of her own" sounds like it should be the name of a Hallmark Channel movie honestly)

11:00

Betty (HBO) "Happy Birthday Tyler" (I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that this is about a kid named Tyler whose birthday it is???) Show about female skateboarder punks!

THAT"S ALL I GOT HERE, HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND ONE AND ALL! I KNOW WE COULD ALL USE IT RIGHT???
