But look Fran Drescher is Fran Drescher no matter what the context, and she's always good company and for that, for that my friends I say To Life, To Life L'Chaim! It may be a bad sitcom that completely squanders the likability of everyone involved (Why is Fran deliberately making her voice even squeakier than normal here???) It may be completely inexplicable to see Steven Weber doing an old jewish man accent, (Is he trying to match Fran???), and it may feature Adam Pally and Abby Elliot trying waayyyy too hard to make any of this material work....but you know what??? They're all menches for trying so very, very hard here and we should honor their commitment or sacrifices to the TV Gods if only for this one time. Also for the record, it was either this or Katy Keene. (Tommy's a rerun) So I flipped a coin! Indebted Won! The Fates Smiled On Fran Tonight! This Is What's On for Thursday March 19th 2020
Streaming:
Picard (CBS ALL ACCESS): "Following an unconventional and dangerous transit, Picard and the crew finally arrive at Soji's home world Coppelius. However, with Romulan warbirds on their tail, their arrival brings only greater danger as the crew discovers more than expected about the planet's inhabitants." (Ahh Yes...I see...greater danger...ahhh) (I don't know, i was doing my best Jeff Goldblume there) ("You see life uhh life finds a way!")
Devs (Hulu): "After Lily's behavior at Amaya, Kenton forces her to see a psychiatrist; Meanwhile the Devs team disagrees over the ethics of their invention, and Forest asserts his commitment to the project" (ohh that Forest--he's such an ass kisser-I've never seen this show--i'm going by the synopsis)
Feel Good (Netflix): Canadian stand up comic Mae Martin navigates a messy but passionate new relationship with new girlfriend George, while also dealing with the challenges of sobriety. (nods) Mae Martin is playing herself, Charlotte Ritchie is playing the love interest, and Lisa Kudrow is also in the show's cast altho I do not know who she is playing--but a cast member of Friends is always a boost no matter which one it is!
Elsewhere on streaming there's something called Ruthless premiering on BET Plus (I didn't even know there was a BET Plus!) and a season three (SEASON THEE!) of something called The Restaurant on Sundance Now. (Sundance NOW!)
Broadcast:
8:00
Young Sheldon (CBS): CBS is in rerun mode tonight because tonight was supposed to be the first night of March Madness coverage for them and when that got cancelled they had no choice but to quickly throw on reruns--so these are those reruns! This episode from December has Sheldon not being invited to neighbor Billy's birthday party, and its clearly his mom's fault as she does not like Sheldon at all, and Mary ever the good mother takes this personally and tries to circumvent this. (although Sheldon really does not care so its all kind of for nothing but pride I guess) Meanwhile George tries to bond with Dr. Sturgis by taking him out to a bar. (This is one of those times where the B story is actually stronger than the A story as the awkwardness of the two of them together is somewhat amusing) ("So you used to date my mother in law huh?" "Sure did" "and then you went crazy and had to be institutionalized" "But I'm Much Better Now!!!" "Yeah, yeah i can see that")
Superstore (NBC): When Amy has to bring her baby to the store, she grows frustrated with people's continual criticisms of her parenting abilities (hoo boy!); Glenn enlists Jerusha for help; Garrett helps Dina plan for a first date with her new boyfriend (Dina met somebody???) (Ohh the veterinarian!!!); and Sandra and Cheyenne hatch a conspiracy theory. (nods) SUPERSTORE MADNESS!!!!!! (You know instead of March Madness???)
Last Man Standing (FOX): Mike and Chuck compete in Outdoorman's annual chili cook off; Ryan and Kyle try to take the place of Kristen and Mandy at Vanessa's weekly mother-daughters luncheon. (I'm guessing that goes smoothly) (The episode is titled--Get This--"Chili Chili Bang Bang!")
Station 19 (ABC): When an Army vet threatens to blow up a pawn shop, Sullivan reflects on his time as an Army Medic to help de-escalate the situation; Vic and Dean try to reason with a man battling Alzheimer's disease; Pruitt takes a stand to honor fallen firefighters. (They should've called this show "Seattle Fire" honestly as these all sound like Chicago Fire stories!)("But Matthew how can you tell the difference???""Because I just can!")
Katy Keene (The CW): In what could've been top pick tonight---"Gloria puts pressure on Katy to design a wedding dress; Jorge wants to keep pushing his career forward so he decides to put on a show; Pepper turns to Alexander and Xandra for an investment app" (shrugs) I got nothin'--Good Luck Jorge?!?!?!?
Love At First Dance (Hallmark): "Sparks fly between a dance instructor and a wealthy bachelor." (Don't they always???) Starring Niall Matter and Becca Tobin. (This sounds like something that could've used a Fran Drescher honestly!)
8:30
Young Sheldon (CBS): Moar Sheldon Reruns! In this one he fakes being sick for some reason (he wants to get out of doing something i think?); he asks for advice from his brother and sister (its rare the episode where they actually try and help him with something); Meanwhile Wallace Shawn tries to spy on Coach but is really bad at doing so. (Ohh yes this is the one with the talking pool, Sheldon is deathly afraid of swimming and hallucinates a pool that makes him feel guilty in an unusually absurdist touch for this show!) (I love that i remembered this!)
Brooklyn 9-9 (NBC): Doug Judy Is Back Baby! & This Time It's Personal; Amy and Charles try to find the perfect new vending machine for the 9-9. (That really sounds like it should be a job for Hitchcock and Scully quite honestly---for once their talents and years of experience with vending machines could count for something!!!!) (Needless to say Craig Robinson guest stars as Doug Judy)
Outmatched (FOX): When the basement has to be renovated keeping Mike and Kay from their safe spaces, the kids hatch a plan to help them get away for the night; Nicole and Brian are left to babysit; which they soon realize is not as easy as the parents make it seem. (Would you say Nicole and Brian are oh i don't know "Outmatched" maybe???)
9:00
Mom (CBS): Rerun from October has Christy trying to adjust to running ridiculous errands for her new eccentric to put it mildly boss (Guest Star Paget Brewster!!!!); Bonnie meanwhile has second thoughts about taking Adam's last name after a lifetime spent with her name. (They got married two episodes prior to this for the record--you'd think that would've come up before then right?)
Will and Grace (NBC): Will ropes Dr. DiLorenzo into going on a false date so he can keep an eye on his surrogate (Bad Will!); Grace struggles with popping her gender reveal balloon (we all know she's going to, I mean its Grace); Karen is torn between celebrating her baseball team's unexpected championship win or helping Jack with his Broadway audition. (Why would Jack depend on Karen of all people for help after all these years of knowing her quite well?!?!?!?)
Deputy (FOX): Charlie, Joseph and Carter investigate a case that becomes more complicated at every turn; Paula is still suffering from PTSD after being taken hostage at the hospital; and Bill's family has to humanize him to the constituents of LA County. (I finally got into this show btw--i binged the first i guess 7 episodes or so back over the weekend) (Steven Dorff reminds me a lot of Keifer Sutherland here which isn't a bad thing, Keifer would've been good here, but he may be a little too old to do some of the things the show has Dorff doing)
Grey's Anatomy (ABC): "Meredith heads up a pro bono surgery day but the overcrowding patient response has her struggling to keep things in order; DeLucca has a teenager patient whom he suspects is in eminent danger." (Well i mean isn't that why that person would come to the hospital in the first place????)
Legacies (The CW): When things take a dark turn on the twins' birthday, Lizzie is forced to make a difficult decision; Hope takes drastic measures when she and Alaric clash over how to handle an issue involving Josie; Rafael makes a heartbreaking decision. (All these decisions! The episode is titled "Life Was So Much Easier When I Only Cared About Myself")
The Bold Type (Freeform): Jen decides to throw Sutton an epic bachelorette party but the bride can't quite bring herself to enjoy the festivities; Kat learns surprising info about RJ; Jane gets career news while facing some devastating personal issues. (Could you imagine if this show was called The Fab Type?) (get it cause Bold was a laundry detergent? Ehh it was weak I know)
After Truth-Disinformation and the Cost of Fake News (HBO): New documentary about the risky phenomenon of fake news and how it impacts the average citizen in the U.S. (Finally the long awaited Weekend Update documentary where we go behind the scenes to find out how they make the jokes every week!!!) (What do you mean its not about SNL??? Actual Fake News?!?!?!? I was really hoping it was about SNL instead)
Wife Swap (Paramount): An animal conservationalist's wife swaps with a hunter's wife who runs a game preserve. (Jeez, does anyone thing that swap will go well like at all?!?!?!?)
Swamp People (History): Swamp People Get No Reason...Swamp People Got No Reason...Swamp People Got No Reason To Live. (Wait, Yeah they do, they got their own show!!!! Shows how much you know Randy Newman!!!)
The Great Food Truck Race (Food): This show starts its 12th season somehow. (I never heard of it either!) (Live and Learn I Guess)
Gomer Pyle (MeTV): Hacker bets Sgt. Carter that he can't go 24 hours without losing his temper. (nods) Classic Pyle!
9:30
Bob Hearts Abishola (CBS): This sitcom gets a special Thursday night airing tho its yet another rerun. (Dottie decides she's well enough post stroke to return to work and Bob panics a little over it)
Indebted (NBC): Top Pick of the night goes to this perfectly lousy new sitcom that has tonight "After agreeing to buy a minivan, Dave goes back on his word to Rebecca; Deb encourages Rebecca to get it anyways and keep it from Dave (she's gonna keep a minivan from Dave?!?!?!?); Stew convinces Dave not to tell Rebecca the real reason he didn't want to get the van." (God this is making my head hurt just typing this! I can't imagine how exhausting it'll all play onscreen!) (TOP PICK LADIES AND GENTLEMEN---TOP PICK!!!!)
Green Acres (MeTV): Lisa finds that a chicken is laying square eggs; the Douglesses investigate. (Square Eggs huh? Like the song says--Its Hip To Be Square!)
10:00
Tommy (CBS): Rerun of the show's 2nd episode where Tommy has to do something or other. I dunno, its a rerun!
Coronavirus (NBC): Pre-empting what would've been a rerun of Law and Order SVU anyways is yet another priemtime news special about this thing that's apparently our new way of life now.
A Million Little Pieces (ABC): Eddie becomes obsessed with trying to resolve mistakes from his past; Shelby and Delilah both take on planning a baby shower for Regina; Maggie's new venture has her rethinking her new relationship. (Ohhh those Million Little Pieces characters always doing A Million Little Things)
Better Things (FX): Sam gives Phil a DNA test, catches something, and releases on Max. (nods) I hope its not CoronaVirus. (God i'm so sick of this thing already! Can we just put a cork in the year already and fast forward to 2021??? Anyone????)
The Sinner (USA): Part 7 finds "After a major turn in the case, Ambrose's tactics are scrutinized" (Scrutinized by who??? His bosses???)
Top Chef (Bravo): Filling the Project Runway void is this other Bravo staple--tonight returning for its 17th Season (!!!!) "A challenge in the Griffith Observatory kicks off the future battle, when the chefs compare each other to how everyone else has progressed since last competing against one another and then the first elimination challenge brings them to the beach to cook a seafood meal" (Is there a catchphrase for this one like Project Runway's Are You In Or Are You Out?)
Cake (FXX): "Bait and Switch" Cast Off and Reel In. (nods)
Vegas Chef Prizefight (Food)
Dead Files (Travel)
Wicked Tuna (Nat Geo): SEASON 9 Premiere!!!!
Building Off the Grid (Discovery)
