SNL Live Thread 2/29/20: John Mulaney and David Byrne

Hello Everybody!!!! Making his way back to the SNL stage to host for the 3rd time is former writer for the show and currently white hot stand up Mulaney. (I don't think anyone would describe John Mulaney as being white hot, mostly because that term would imply that he's some sort of amped up figure prone to emotional outbursts and not well Millennial Seinfeld) (Millennial Seinfeld sounds like it should be a burn and yet I like think of it as a compliment, Seinfeld was amazing in his prime---also its a fairly accurate shorthand description of what his sensibilities as a comedian are kind of like--i mean is his humor not of the observational kind???)

Anyways  last time he hosted the show marked one of the best shows SNL had had in a while at that point (and indeed even my sister was like "Who was that guy?!?!?!? He was great!!!!" I say "even my sister" because she doesn't really follow comedians so she had zero idea whom Mulaney was before he hosted and he was so good as a host even she took notice)  Hopefully tonight's episode can follow suit and also be especially memorable! Mulaney absolutely looks to be cementing his place as currently popular stand-up who can host the show on a once a season basis and draw an audience (If you remember the last popular comedian to do that was Louis C.K. whom i believe had managed to host 5 years in a row straight before scandal brought him down.) Apparently Lorne Michaels himself asked him to host tonight's episode causing him to have to cancel a concert appearance in Toronto! So i guesss Mulaney really is a go-to host for the show these days--which has gotta be a real thrill for a former writer of the show! (I mean i would imagine it to be at least right?)

Musical guest the legendary David Byrne hasn't appeared on the show as a musical guest since 1989--where he was promoting his first ever solo album post Talking Heads break-up. Its kind of hard to believe he didn't appear on the show at least once in the 90s--he had several albums that decade--but whatever the reason, he's here tonight! (I'd say it was to promote his "American Utopia" show but that actually recently finished its run although I hear it may be going on tour at some point in the near future???)

So tonight's combo of host and musical guest would certainly seem to imply that its gonna be a good show--i mean seriously David Byrne!!!!!---So i'm hoping it turns out to be a good one!

Vintage SNL is from February of 2017---which saw Alec Baldwin hosting (was that the last time he properly hosted????) with musical guest Ed Sheeran.

My own Leap Day has been pretty dull---its been in the 20s here so i've largely stayed in my nice warm house. (God Bless My Nice Warm House!!!!) just watching tv. (Hooray For TV!!!!)
