Jeopardy! recap for Mon., Feb. 10

Introducing today's contestants:

- Natalie, a translator from Pennsylvania, is an accomplished 135-pound sumo wrestler;
- Vinny, a student from Massachusetts, had a party that nearly caved in the floor; and
- Gauravi, a nuclear engineer & improv comedian from Ohio, has sampled over 1,000 beers. Gauravi entered the game as a one-day champ with winnings of $25,601.

Natalie missed both DDs in DJ but was still able to hold first place into FJ with $12,800 vs. $11,800 for champ Gauravi and $6,200 for Vinny.

DD1, $800 - NO BELL - In Greek myth, sailors resisted the calls of these sea nymphs by putting wax in their ears (Vinny won $1,200 on a true DD.)

DD2, $800 - BEFORE & AFTER AT THE MOVIES - A holiday classic in which an angel gets his wings & Roberto Benigni gets an Oscar (Natalie, who appeared to forget the category, lost $3,000 from her score of $14,600 vs. $11,000 fir Gauravi.)

DD3, $2,000 - PRESIDENTIAL HOMES- Dead just 3 months after retiring, James K. Polk was buried at Polk Place in this state capital (Natalie lost $2,000 from her total of $14,800 vs. $11,800 for Gauravi.)

FJ - SPORTS TERMS - A member of the British Amateur Athletic Club wrote this 1867 set of 12 regulations whose name honors nobleman John Sholto Douglas

Everyone was incorrect on FJ. This should have been good news for Gauravi, who only needed to bet $601 to cover Vinny, but instead wagered $9,801 and dropped to $1,999.

Meanwhile,  Vinny chose to forego the percentage play of betting at least $5,000, instead going with a wager of $2,801. This worked out for him in the end, as after Natalie's $12,000 bet was revealed, Vinny had enough left over to take the victory with $3,399.

Triple Stumper of the day: The players didn't guess the word for an "area away from the coast" that is also a Nordic country without the first letter is inland.

Clue selection strategy: After DD2 was selected with 10 other clues remaining, the players stayed in the category and chose clues in the upper part of the board instead of shopping for DD3 in the higher-value clues.

Correct Qs:
DD1 - What are sirens?
DD2 - What is "It's a Wonderful Life is Beautiful?" (Natalie stopped at "Life" without adding an "after" title.)
DD3 - What is Nashville?
FJ - What are the Marquess of Queensberry Rules? (I assume that quite a few people got this from being viewers of Adult Swim.)
