What's On Tonight (Sunday): Preserving Our Television Heritage, Fifth Edition

NewsRadio, "Smoking"
Hello out there in TV Watching Land. The first weekend of the 2020s comes to an end tonight (519 remain) and currently, there are many streaming sites out there offering new, original content...
Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Disney+, Apple TV+, DC Universe, CBS All Access, Spectrum, HBO Now, Showtime, Starz, Facebook Watch, BritBox, Acorn TV, ESPN+, BET+, YouTube, Quibi, Pluto TV, Crackle, Cinemax, Shudder, Hallmark Channel Everywhere, Tubi, CW Seed, Vimeo, Motor Trend, Sundance Now, Crunchyroll, Funimation, DirecTV Now/AT&T TV Now, Fox Nation, Shudder, and PBS Passport. (Remember Yahoo! Screen, go90, and Seeso? RIP.)
So what better time than to remind you that despite all the outlets currently out there (what I listed is only a fraction of the list), plenty of shows from the past deserve some recognition. And being the first Sunday of a new year, there is a large handful of pilot episodes as various networks roll out new Sunday schedules. Tonight, there are pilots for The Fugitive, Family Ties, Doctor Who, Mission: Impossible, Designing Women, and more. Elsewhere, Alex Trebek examines the history and legacy of the American game show, golden awards are handed out for you award season junkies, the Doctor saves the universe (literally, probably), Power is back, the Clinton impeachment gets the spotlight, and we get to see what a Martian day is like. So you're mission, if you choose to accept it, here's what's on television for tonight, Sunday, January 5!

EARLY PRIMETIME

60 Minutes (CBS, 7 p.m.): Tonight it profiles Jeffrey Epstein's death (it was the lizard people!), antibiotic use at farms, and singer Shakira. Her hips don't lie.

⭐ Doctor Who πŸ“Ί (Retro TV, 6 p.m.): Before you watch the new episode later tonight, check out how it all began! Tonight, Retro TV serves up the four-part serial An Unearthly Child. Yes, the characters are a little different than in subsequent episodes, but it is the introduction of Suzanne, Barbara, and Ian. Given the era and budget, it's a damn fine piece of television. Personally, my favorite early serial is the third, The Edge of Destruction.✔️

Star Wars Resistance (Disney XD, 6 p.m.): Kragan buys a secret weapon to capture the Colossus and take over; when Synara discovers the plan, she tries to warn Kaz and crew, but it may be too late.

The Wedding Do Over πŸŽ₯ (UPtv, 7 p.m.): Abby is a wedding planner who specializes in fixing nuptials that went wrong. Forced to work with her ex-fiance, she soon begins to question whether their relationship was the disaster that she remembers.

Alex Trebek's Game Changers (Reelz, 8 p.m.): Jeopardy! quizmaster Alex Trebek takes a personal journey through the world of television game shows to examine the impact they’ve had on North American entertainment culture. This has Jay S written all over it, right? Right.✔️

Doctor Who (BBC America, 8 p.m.): And now the Doctor settles into her regular timeslot and concludes a great series opener. Instead, Fox moves up Family Guy and sits out the rest of the night. When Lois gets a job as the music teacher at Chris and Meg's school, a mean student decides to make Lois the target of her antics.

⭐ Family Ties πŸ“Ί (Antenna TV, 8 p.m.): Steven and Elyse are appalled their son, Alex, goes to a dance at an elitist, restricted country club. ♫ What would we do baby without us / Sha-la-la-la ♫

Ray Donovan (Showtime, 8 p.m.): This show was a Jeopardy! clue last week! Ray and Smitty must cover for their own actions. Daryll calls Jasmine with an opportunity that lands them face-to-face with Declan Sullivan. Terry and Bunchy head back upstate to settle some unfinished business with the Shaman.

The Simpsons (Fox, 8 p.m.): Homer and Marge attend Artie Ziff's wedding and become quite uncomfortable when they realize that his bride-to-be is a clone of Marge. Meanwhile, Lisa grapples with the misogynistic implications of the popularity she receives after getting braces.
