Jeopardy! recap for Tue., Jan. 21

Here are today's contestants:

- Samantha, an English teacher from California, wears her Jeopardy! hat when coaching lacrosse;
- Steve, a data analyst from Virginia, will be called "Stevie Showers" when he's a TV weatherman; and
- Dennis, a bartender from Maine, waited on actor Gary Merrill, aka "Mr. Bette Davis". Dennis entered the game as a two-day champ with winnings of $39,202.

Dennis took first place on DD2 but lost it back on DD3, so it was Steve showing the way into FJ with $10,000 vs. $7,200 for Dennis and $6,000 for Samantha.

DD1, $600 - GRAVESITE OFFERINGS - Visitors often leave pennies face up on the Baltimore grave of this assassin (Dennis lost $1,000 from his total of $1,600.)

DD2, $2,000 - A CAPITAL CITY IDEA - Playwright August Strindberg's home, with rooms furnished like stage sets, is now his museum in this capital (Dennis won $2,500 from his score of $4,400 vs. $6,800 for Steve.)

DD3, $1,600 - THE USG - The USCCR isn't a classic rock band but the United States Commission on these important CRs (Dennis lost $2,500 from his total of $9,700 vs. $8,000 for Steve.)

FJ - CLASSIC MOVIES - This 1939 film was loosely based on Senator Burton Wheeler, victim of a sham investigation for looking into the Justice Department

Dennis and Samantha were correct on FJ, with Dennis adding $4,801 to win with $12,001 for a three-day total of $51,203.

Vocabulary vexations: No one knew the activists who "dis"agreed with the Soviet line were "dissidents" , or the word meaning "to speak" that adding "m" to makes it something hard to hear is "utter".

Judging the writers: In a clue about the sci-fi TV series "The Orville", it was described as a comedy on Fox. Two issues: although it has humorous elements, it's not best described as a comedy, and it no longer runs on Fox, as it moves to Hulu later this year.

Correct Qs:
DD1 - Who was Booth?
DD2 - What is Stockholm?
DD3 - What are Civil Rights?
FJ - What is "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington"?
