What's On Tonight (Friday): Van Helsing Puts A Stake In Its 4th Season

As you might be able to tell from my top pick tonight--there's not much on tonight as i'm sure the networks assume everyone and their grandmother is stampeding to the theaters to see either Star Wars or Cats. I have a friend who's stubbornly insisting on seeing both tonight because he's a madman! This is What's On for December 20th 2019 (hey its my mom's birthday today!)

Streaming:

The Witcher (Netflix): This expensive looking new fantasy series starring one Henry Cavill premieres "The witcher Geralt, a mutant monster hunter struggles to find his place in the world in which people often prove to be more wicked than beasts" Will this be the new Game of Thrones??? I'm gonna go out on a wild swing and say No...but maybe it'll be entertaining??? It looks dark and grungy enough!  Jodhi May is also in it!

The Two Popes (Netflix): Also premiering on the Netflix tonight is this Anthony Hopkins/Jonathan Pryce movie about Two Popes (Benedict and Francis) who meet to discuss the future for the Catholic Church and common ground. (shrugs) If you're gonna have Two Popes in a movie, at least give one of  'em a super power or something. (Gasps) You could call them Super Popes!!!

The Aeronauts (Amazon): Amazon has the premiere of this Eddie Redmayne/Felicity Jones starring movie which follows a scientist and a widow who becomes his assistant as they seek to fly a hot air balloon higher than anyone has ever done in history before. This movie takes place in the 1860s. I don't know what the point of this one is either but someone spent 40 million dollars to make it incredibly enough so it was clearly someone's passion project. From the director of last year's movie "Wild Rose" which got great reviews.

Togo (Disney Plus): Willem Dafoe  and Julianne Nicholson star in a movie about a sled dog named Togo who in 1925 led the Serun Run but was considered by many to be too small and weak to lead such a grueling intensive race. (Its another dog sled racing in the Arctic movie based on a true story like Iron Will or 8 Mile or Snow Dogs--all of which were released theatrically by Disney--i wonder if there's a reason why they didn't try to put this one in theaters as well--it prob would've made a profit)

Disney also has a new docuseries premiering called "Pick of the Litter" as well as new episodes of World According To Jeff Goldblum, Encore, High School Musical The Series, Marvel's Hero Project,

Meanwhile APPLE TV (yes that's still a thing) has the season finales of their shows--The Morning Show,  and For All Mankind both of which will be back for a season two presumably next fall.

They also havea new episodes of The Servant, and Truth Be Told both of which still have some episodes left yet to go before they finish off.

Broadcast:

8:00

I Love Lucy Christmas Special (CBS): Pre-empting Hawaii 5-0 tonight is this new colorized special of 2 old I Love Lucy episodes. (Lucy's great and all but she's no Scott Caan you know???)

Global Citizen Prize (NBC): London' Albert Royal Hall hosts this shindig honoring outstanding good deeds done by citizens across the globe. John Legend hosts. (Why is this a special???)

Celebrating Marvel's Stan Lee (ABC): Honoring the life and legacy of the man behind Marvel comics, a slew of people involved in various Stan Lee movies and tv shows are set to appear including Mark Hamil (wait a minute Mark Hamil???) and various people from Agents of SHIELD

Friday Night Smackdown (FOX): Smackdowns are one again passed down and handed around. (Its practically like a Shabbat Dinner at this point for wrestling fans!)

Penn and Teller Fool Us (The CW): Rerun

The Christmas Temp (Lifetime): An unemployed artist discovers a Christmas temp agency that puts her in some festive jobs where she meets some eccentrics and learns some things. (Having worked for several temp agencies during the holiday season, let me tell you, it is not any more magical than any other time of year! Once I got let go by a temp agency and then like a couple days later got a Christmas card from them) This stars Sara Canning and Robin Dunne

A Christmas Detour (Hallmark): Candice Cameron Bure---A woman gets stranded and must team up with someone to get home on Christmas Eve. (Blah, blah, blah)

9:00

Magnum PI (CBS): The assassin who killed Higgins' former lover has re-surfaced in Hawaii and she wants revenge; Magnum asks Rick to take over the case that he had been working on in order to help Higgins out but once Rick takes the case, it ends up going sideways on him and T.C.  (This is a rerun from last January)

Dateline (NBC): Takes another look at the Laci Peterson case

20/20 (ABC): Profile of Jim and Tammy Faye Baker (also a rerun from last January)

Whose Line Is It Anyways (The CW): Back to back episodes--both reruns from June--9:00 ep is Chris Hardwick and the 9:30 ep is Tinashe and Jeff Davis

American Masters (PBS): Mike Nichols Profile---this one has been rerun several times but it originally first aired back in 2016!

Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives (Food): Guy meets his doppleganger who runs a bowling alley and runs a diner known for killer oxtail soup in Hawaii; A place in Baltimore that has a mash-up of soups that has the city flocking to this restaurant; and a pizza making chef in New Mexico spices up her stuff with Santa Fe style. (What would constitute Santa Fe style for a pizza???)

Gold Rush (Discovery): Dustin hits bedrock on a pile of nuggets; Rick tries to outsmart a piece of equipment with a mind of its own; Parker splurges on a new toy to get some more gold; the Boots bring in a hired gun; and Fred chases a gulf upstream to a dangerous new spot. (Outsmarts a piece of equipment huh???)

9:30

Green Acres (MeTV): Oliver and Lisa go head to head in the race for the mayor of Hooterville. (Proving yet again that the writers of Arrow were inspired by plotlines of Green Acres episodes--i mean how else to explain how or why they decided to have Oliver Queen become Mayor of Star City???)

10:00

Blue Bloods (CBS): Rerun from last December (Awww) has "When a video leaks of officers partaking in a clear case of entrapment, Frank searches for the leaker; Eddie retaliates against a co-worker who keeps pranking Jamie; and Danny and Baez investigate the murder of a tabloid writer."  (Once again, I think i've seen this one but am unsure--the pranking plotline is pretty vivid to me, but the other two not so much)

Van Helsing (Syfy): Top Pick of the night goes to this post vampire apocalypse set show wrapping up its 4th season--been airing and listed here every week since the last week in September and as I try to give every weekly show top pick at least once--it was only fair to give this one its place in the sun--even tho it really hasn't been very good this season if i were to be honest even tho it did feature one Neal McDonough. For one thing the titular character has been M.I.A. for most of the season--however in tonight's finale "The President (ooh!) and Ivory try to decipher what really happened in the Dark Realm once and for all"  (Way to get the President involved Van Helsing people!)

UFO's Secret Alien Technology (History): a look at the inventions of the 20th century and could they have been products of reverse engineered alien tech??? (I dunno who's to say that aliens didn't really invent the toaster and the alarm clock radio man!!! The Truth Is Out There!!!)

Christmas In Louisiana (Lifetime): Jana Kramer, Bary Bostwick (!!!!), Dee Wallace, and Moira Kelly all co-star in this one. (shrugs)

Christmas In Evergreen (Hallmark): Ashley Williams, Jill Wagner, and Maggie Lawson  (Let me ask you guys something---When Christmas Is Over, Do These Movies Officially Stop Showing or do they last straight thru til New Year's???)

HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND YOU GUYS---THIS LIST WAS SOMEWHAT PAINFUL TO COMPILE!!!! I MEAN IF YOU'RE THANKFUL FOR A RERUN EPISODE OF THE NEW VERSION OF MAGNUM P.I, YOU KNOW SOMETHING'S GONE HORRIBLY, HORRIBLY WRONG WITH THE NETWORKS PRIMETIME LINEUP FOR THE EVENING!
