Jeopardy! recap for Fri., Dec. 27

Today's contestants are:

- Matt, a musician from Massachusetts, plays the church pipe organ;
- Jamison, an actor-writer from California, was part of Second City but couldn't quite remember the title of SCTV's "Half Wits" with Eugene Levy spoofing Trebek; and
- Karen, a political consultant from Virginia, has pets with literary names. Karen entered the game as a one-day champ with winnings of $17,200.

Karen fell into second place by missing DD3, but recovered to regain the lead into FJ with $11,900 vs. $9,200 for Jamison and $8,800 for Matt.

DD1, $1,000 - PROVERBS - In Spanish this familiar proverb is "Mas vale tarde que nunca" (Karen won $2,000 from her leading score of $3,800.)

DD2, $2,000 - INTERNATIONAL SPORTS - The British Empire Games are now known by this name, as the Brits are somewhat less imperial now (Matt won $2,600 on a true DD.)

DD3, $2,000 - THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTIONS - In 1905 this ship sailed into Odessa with a revolutionary attitude, a red flag and a "people's committee" newly in charge (Karen lost $1,500 from her leading total of $8,200 vs. $6,800 for Jamison.)

FJ - ART FIRSTS - The first French museum to buy this type of painting was the Musée des Beaux Arts in Lyon, in 1901

Karen and Matt were correct on FJ, with Karen adding $6,501 to win with $18,401 for a two-day total of $35,601.

Clue selection strategy: With three clues remaining in a single category in round one and the DD remaining, the challengers chose the $200 and $400 clues before the $1,000. Even disregarding the likely location of the DD, not sure why they'd risk time running out before taking the most valuable clue.

Triple Stumpers of the day: No one was familiar with the economic proverb "There's no such thing as a free lunch", or knew the Davis Cup is a competition in tennis.

Correct Qs:
DD1 - What is "Better late than never"?
DD2 - What is the Commonwealth Games?
DD3 - What is Potemkin?
FJ - What is an Impressionist?
