Politics Corner, September 13th

We now return to our regularly scheduled programming. Let's start with some good news about bad news. We might be too stupid to do enough to stop climate change but we've raised smart kids who will. Greta Thunberg has brought her campaign to the US including school strikes. She went to the White House today, but not inside: "I don't want to meet with people who don't accept the science." [NPR]

The US is still buddying up to bullies that Trump wants to call friends. Instead of reducing US military presence in Syria as planned we are now sending more troops to provide a buffer between Syrian Kurds who have been fighting ISIS alongside us and the Turkish troops across the border in Turkey. It's bad enough what Erdoğan does to Kurds in Turkey. Why do want to help him expand the hate into Syria? [The Hill]

This is what I get for letting Netanyahu distract me. It turns out that a far right party might save Israel from Netanyahu and hand power back to the center. Why? People on the far right want the ultra-orthodox to serve in the military like everyone else and get jobs when they get out. I didn't see that one coming. [NBC]

Boris still thinks he'll get his Brexit and still refuses to file for extension. [BBC]

Careful with that camera. Venezuela's Juan Guaidó may be brought down by a selfie. He claims that he was asked for hundreds of pictures that day. How was he to know one of those pictures was with two Columbian Rostrojo gang members. [The Guardian]

The US Air Force must have thought they were in good with Trump what with sending all that business to him and oversees so that Attorney General in New York couldn't bring a case to court. They sure must have been surprised to find out that Trump thinks they're Mexico and they're going to pay for the wall. This could be funny if those funding diversions didn't have such dangerous consequences. [Politico] [NBC]

An Appeals Court has reinstated an emoluments clause case that a District Court had thrown out claiming "curiosity" could explain all that extra business at Trump properties. Trump will have to defend this or convince the full Appeals Court or the US Supreme Court to throw the case out. [ABC]

The Department of Justice flaunted its contempt for Congress by stating that congress has "come nowhere close to demonstrating a particularized need" to see Mueller Grand Jury materials. You'd think they were investigating impeachment of the President or something. [CNN]

The Sackler family of Oxycontin/Purdue Pharma notoriety used Swiss banks to conceal funds as part of a movement of more than four billion dollars offshore. Of course they're being sued but guess who can afford some really good attorneys? [The Guardian]

PG&E has agreed to an eleven billion dollar settlement with insurance companies for the massive forest fires that it is responsible for. PG&E has previously settled with municipalities. [NPR]

Liberty University students found out what Jerry Falwell, Jr. said about them and they are pissed. Oh, and maybe all those other horrible things about Jerry Fallwell, Jr. too. [ABC]

Thought it was safe to turn the television back on? The Democrats are giving you just enough time to discover which new shows you don't like before they come back October 14th with another debate. On the up side maybe some of these candidates will drop out by then. This is unlikely as eleven candidates already claim to have qualified. This could lead to a dreaded second night of debate. Politics Corner will be there to share your pain, live blogging until the madness stops. We're back to CNN in conjunction with The New York Times at Otterbein University in Westerville, OH. [CNN]
